Mistake-Riddled Third Dooms Mavericks In Loss to Army

ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington baseball team (4-7) fell in midweek action to Army (3-7) at Clay Gould Ballpark 8-4 on Tuesday evening.

Five Mavericks combined on the bump in the loss.  Brayden Brooks (L, 0-2) earned the start, tossing 2.1 innings. He gave up four runs off six hits with two walks.  Sam Collins (2.1 IP), Jack Hagan (1.1 IP), Matt Novis (2.0 IP) and Trevor Pruitt (1.0 IP) combined in relief effort.

UTA finished with six hits in the game.  Tanner Rice and Artie Ramirez both ended with two hits, while Oscar Ponce and Zach Henry came away with the other two hits.  Ponce led UTA with two RBI on the day.

The Mavericks jumped on the board first, putting runners on the corners through the first two batters with a walk and a single.  Oscar Ponce hit a deep fly ball to center field to plate Jaden Brown and score the first run of the game.

Army looked to strike back in the second, loading the bases with two outs.  A one-pitch fly out ended any threat as the Mavs kept the lead.

Errors in the third inning plagued the Mavericks as the Black Knights loaded the bases again, taking advantage of the situation this time around. A single through the five-gap scored one run before a fielding error and throwing error scored three runs.  A double to left center pushed the fourth run of the inning.

Patience at the plate paid off for the Mavericks in the fourth inning, using two walks and single to load the bases.  Artie Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to right-center field to cut into the Black Knights lead.

A single followed by two wild pitches in the fifth inning put a runner at third with no outs for Army. A ground out to second base scored the sixth run of the game for the visiting team.

The Black Knights plated two more in the 6th inning off three hits to extend the score to 8-2.

The Mavericks used three hits in the 7th inning to score two runs.  Tanner Rice hit his first career RBI with a hard-hit ground ball up the middle of the defense. Ponce followed with his second RBI of the day with an identically hit ball to make the score 8-4.

UTA will be back at The Gould tomorrow for a 6:30 pm game against Army to wrap up the two-game series against the Black Knights.
