ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington baseball team (5-7) evened the midweek series against Army on Wednesday evening, defeating the Black Knights 8-5 at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Maverick pitching staff was dealing on Wednesday night, striking out a season-high 16 batters.
Cade Winquest (ND) earned the start for the Mavericks, tossing a season-high 4.0 innings while striking out seven batters. He allowed four runs off five hits.
Connery Peters (W, 2-0) struck out five batters in 3.0 innings, with one unearned run.
David Moffat and
Tanner King (S, 2) tossed the final two innings of relief, with King striking out the side in the ninth.
The Mavericks finished with seven hits, led by
Justin Marino's 2-for-3 day at the plate.
Tyler Rice knocked in a career-high three RBI, while going 1-for-3 at the plate.

A rough top of the first inning put the Mavericks behind early as The Black Knights used two hits, a passed ball and wild pitch to score three runs.
The Mavericks were able to recover quickly as their bats were hot in the bottom of the first, coming away with five hits and scoring four runs to take the lead. A leadoff single from
Jaden Brown put the Mavericks in business before a double to left field from
Oscar Ponce score the first run. Following a
Zach Henry walk,
Wilson Galvan and
Justin Marino hit bloopers to score two runs while a groundout from
Tyler Rice scored the final run of the inning.
Tyler Rice came back two innings later with his second RBI of the game, using a blooper to left field to score Marino extending the lead to 5-3 after three innings.
The Black Knights cut into the Maverick lead in the fourth inning. A leadoff single and error put a runner on second before a double to right field score the runner.
It was déjà vu in the fifth, as a lead off single was extended with another error. The Black Knights would score the run after stealing third base and taking home with a wild pitch to even the score at five.
The Mavericks had another answer for the Black Knights in the fifth inning, loading the bases with the first three batters. Matt Cavanagh used an eight pitch at-bat to draw a walk and score
Zach Henry. Back-to-back sacrifice hits from
Tyler Rice and
Cade Sumbler extended the lead to 8-5.
