CONWAY, S.C. – A two-run sixth inning was the difference in a low-scoring affair, as the UT Arlington baseball team fell to Coastal Carolina 3-2 on Sunday afternoon to drop to 11-29 overall and 4-14 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Cade Winquest (L, 1-3) started for the Mavericks, allowing three runs off five hits in 5.2 innings pitched.
David Moffat tossed the final 2.1 innings in relief.
Boone Montgomery had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI, scoring
Zach Henry and
Wilson Galvan.
The Chanticleers struck first, using a leadoff double and passed ball to put the baserunner on third before a wild pitch allowed the runner to score.
A leadoff walk of
Wilson Galvan, followed by a stolen base put the Mavericks in business in the top of the second. A single to right field off the bat of
Boone Montgomery pushed in Galvan to tie the game.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Montgomery connected on his second base knock to drive in the second run of the game for the Mavericks and put UTA on top 2-1.
The Chants got things going in the bottom of the sixth as the first three batters reached base. A fielder's choice and a wild pitch plated two runs for Coastal which would end up being the deciding runs in the game.
UTA will return to Arlington for a four-game home stand beginning on Tuesday (April 26) at 6:30 p.m. against Tarleton State.
