BOONE, N.C. – The UT Arlington softball team dropped both games in Friday's double header at App State with final scores of 7-6 and 7-2.
UTA will conclude its series at App Saturday with the first pitch set for 2 p.m. EST. The Mavericks move on to an overall record of 21-22 and a conference record of 11-12.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: at App State (L, 7-6)
The Mavericks put 10 hits together in game one of the doubleheader as
KJ Murphy paced UTA's offense going 3-4 at the plate with a 2-run home run – her sixth of the year – with three RBI. Following Murphy was second baseman
Jessica Carreon who went finished with two hits.
Morgan Max earned the start in the circle for the Mavs as she went on to allow just one earned run off just two hits. Max came away with five strike outs in the four innings pitched.
Gracie Bumpurs and
Jessica Adams shared time in the circle giving up a combined five runs.
UTA was unable to answer back giving Bumpurs her sixth loss of the season.
PLAY BY PLAY: at App State (L, 7-6)
- The Mavericks jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning after Carreon scored off a throwing error form the Mountaineers' catcher and a 2-run home run from the bat of Murphy – her sixth of the season.
- UTA tabbed another 3-run inning in the top of the fifth as Murphy knocked in Carreon courtesy of an RBI-single before Wideman launched an RBI-double to extend UTA's lead 5-0. From there, Rios knocked in Murphy with an RBI-single through the right side which made it 6-0.
- App State cut the deficit down to four in the bottom of the sixth as an RBI-single and wild pitch made it a 6-2 game.
- The Mountaineers grabbed a 7-6 lead off a 5-run sixth inning that would put App on top to take game one of the series.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: at App State (L, 7-2)
The Mavs put up four hits in game two of Friday's action as
Sophie Wideman (1-3),
Morgan Rios (1-2),
Kimber Cortemelia (1-3) and
Amber Langston (1-3) all came away with one hit apiece.
Cortemelia launched her first home run of the season with a solo shot.
Haley Mountain also tabbed an RBI off a sacrifice fly to left field that plated UTA's first run of the game.
Jessica Adams received the loss on the mound as she moved onto 12-14 on the season. Adams allowed three earned runs off four hits across 15 batters faced.
PLAY BY PLAY: at App State (L, 7-2)
- The Mavs scored first in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to left field from Mountain that brought Langston home.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Mountaineers put up three runs to take a 3-1 lead off a 2-run home run and an RBI-single.
- UTA answered back with a solo home run from the bat of Cortemelia that cut the deficit down by one.
- App State had a breakout fifth inning as they extended their lead 7-2 off two home runs and an RBI-double.
- The Mavericks were unable to answer back falling to the Mountaineers, 7-2.
ON DECK
UTA will wrap up the series at App State with the final game on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
