ARLINGTON, Texas – Under sunny Sunday skies, the UT Arlington Mavericks (10-17, 4-5 SBC) secured the Sun Belt Conference series win with a 5-2 victory over ULM (9-16-1, 4-4-1 SBC) at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Cade Winquest (W, 1-1) began the day on the mound for the Mavs, giving his team 7.0 innings, allowing one run, zero earned, on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk. In Sun Belt Conference play, Winquest now sports a 1-0 record with a 0.73 ERA while allowing only five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 12.1 innings.
Connery Peters (0.1 IP) and
David Moffat (SV, 2) worked out of the bullpen to close out the series win. Moffat threw 1.2 shutout innings, allowing only one hit.
UTA's offense put up five runs on nine hits, with eight of the nine starters reaching base safely. Highlighted by
Jaden Brown (3-4, R, BB),
Wilson Galvan (2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, R) and
Oscar Ponce (2-3, R, SB). Ponce raised his conference batting average to .324 with seven runs and five RBI after posting multi-hit games in five of his past six games.
In the bottom of the first, Brown poked a leadoff single through the right side of the infield with Ponce dropping a bloop single into shallow left field to put runners on first and second. Galvan blistered a ball past the diving third baseman into the left field corner for a 2-RBI double.
A string of unfortunate events in the top of the third inning led to ULM scratching across their first run of the game despite not registering a hit.
Galvan added a second double to his ledger in the home half of the third inning driving a 1-0 pitch down the left field line to cruise into second safely. After advancing on a groundout, the sophomore transfer would come home to score on an
Artie Ramirez sacrifice fly giving UTA a 3-1 advantage.
Cason Gregory recorded the first out of the fourth inning with a sensational defensive play. The shortstop ranged behind second base to make a sliding stop on a center-field-bound dribbler and beat the runner with the throw.
UT Arlington kept their foot on the petal in the bottom of the fourth with consecutive hit-by-pitches giving Brown a sacrifice bunt opportunity with no outs. The leadoff hitter dropped a gracefully placed bunt which led to an errant throw past first base, scoring both runners and widened the gap to 5-1.
Winquest's no-hit bid ended in the sixth on a single up the middle, but the Warhawks would not be able to tally any runs in the inning.
In the eighth inning, the Mavericks turned to their bullpen which gave up one run on two hits, stranding two on base to trim the lead to 5-2.
Moffat returned to the bump in the top of the ninth inning to record the final three outs on 12 pitches, including a swinging strikeout.
