STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Head Coach
Darin Thomas claimed his 400
th career win on Wednesday evening as the UT Arlington baseball team defeated Tarleton in a wild 16-13 game at the Tarleton Baseball Complex.
"We've had some really great players and great assistant coaches that have helped me get to where I am," said Thomas. "I know it's cliche, but I wouldn't be here if it weren't for them."
Seven pitchers combined in the win for the Mavericks, with
Cade Citelli (ND) picking up the start.
Connery Peters (W, 3-0) earned the win for the Mavericks, while
Hunter Marshall (S, 1) picked up his first career start.
Zach Peters made his collegiate.
The Mavericks finished with 13 hits, led by
Boone Montgomery's 3-for-5 night at the plate.
Zach Henry,
Nick Pierce,
Artie Ramirez and
Tyler Rice each finished with two hits. Henry, Ramirez, Rice and Montgomery each had two RBI on the night as well.
The Texans were the first to strike, using a single and sacrifice fly to right field to score two early runs.
The Mavericks got one back in the next frame, using an
Artie Ramirez stand-up double down the left field line to drive in
Nick Pierce.
Tarleton added three runs on the second inning to push their run total to five, using one hit and three walks to score the runs.
Nick Pierce led off the fourth inning with a double before the Texans committed three errors over the next four batters to score two runs.
The Maverick bats came alive in the top of the fifth inning batting around the order before surrounding an out. UTA spread six-hits over the nearly forty-minute top half of the inning, while using four hit batters to score eight runs.
The Texans scored two runs in the sixth inning using three walks and two hit-by-pitches cut make the score 11-7.
UTA came back in the eighth inning, pouring on five more runs on the Texans. Early inning mistakes allowed the Mavericks to score two runs, coming off two hit-by-pitches and an error. Late in the inning,
Boone Montgomery doubled through the left side to score one run, before
Zach Henry connected on a two-RBI single.
Tarleton came up with a big inning in the bottom frame. With two outs and bases loaded, an eighth inning rally commenced as the Texans put up six runs on three hits to cut the Maverick lead to three runs.
The Texans put runners on first and second in the 9
th inning, but
Hunter Marshall would strikeout the final batter to secure the win.
The Mavericks will have a day off before beginning a three-game series against Little Rock, beginning Friday at 4 pm in Little Rock.
