ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington baseball (14-30, 6-15 SBC) clinched the series win with a 5-4 victory over Arkansas State (10-29, 5-15 SBC) at Clay Gould Ballpark on Sunday.
Starting pitcher
Cade Winquest (ND) was able to give his team 6.0 innings of work and matched a season-high mark of seven strikeouts (3/9 v. Army, 3/15 v. ACU).
David Moffat (W, 2-6) provided 3.0 shutout innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
Matthew Cavanagh led the charge collecting three hits on the day for a stellar weekend performance going 7-14 with three RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases. This weekend's series improved his batting average to .250 after collecting only three hits in April prior to Friday night's game.
"I've been working with our coaches every day in the cages to correct some of the things I've been messing up," Cavanagh said. "Credit to (coach Galen Mcspadden) for helping to correct my swing."
The Mavericks offense did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard after loading the bases with a
Tyler Rice 2-RBI single that he lobbed into shallow left field.
Cavanagh followed with an RBI single on a drive to left-center to give his team a 3-0 advantage at the end of the first.
Winquest carried a perfect game through 2.2 innings before allowing a two-out, two-run rally by the Red Wolves in the third to reduce the UTA lead to 3-2.
Arkansas State was able to add two more runs in the fourth after a controversial no-call on what was ruled an infield single with two outs to pull ahead 4-3.
Despite tallying hits in the fourth and fifth innings, UTA was not able to break the stalemate until the bottom of the sixth when
Cavanagh singled and later stole second base. A timely, two-out RBI single from
Cason Gregory knotted the score at 4-4.
Moffat was able to retire the side, in order, in both the seventh and eighth innings to set the table for his offense in the home half of the eighth.
Cavanagh was able to replicate his sixth inning output with another single and subsequent stolen base of second. With a runner in scoring position,
Sumbler flared a single into left field for the game-clinching RBI.
A leadoff single in the top of the ninth filled Clay Gould with tense energy. After consecutive full-count putouts, a high fly ball into deep right field threatened to fall in before a ranging play by center fielder
Boone Montgomery ended the game.
"Boone saved us all weekend," head coach
Darin Thomas said. "If he doesn't make the plays he made this weekend, including the last one, we don't win this series."
