ARLINGTON, Texas – The UTA Mavericks (14-35, 6-19) lost 3-1 against Appalachian State (17-28, 8-17) on Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Tanner King (L, 2-5) started for UT Arlington and spun 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, one walk and one HBP with one strikeout.
David Moffat finished the game with three scoreless innings, only allowing three hits while retiring two via the strikeout.
Jaden Brown and
Boone Montgomery supplied their team a pair of singles to lead off the game which led to a bases-loaded opportunity after a
Zach Henry walk but App State was able to escape the inning unscathed.
The visitors capitalized with a solo home run in the second and added another run in the third on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.
UTA threatened their opponents in the bottom of the fourth with a
Wilson Galvan single and a Henry hit-by-pitch, both of whom were able to advance to scoring position on a fielder's choice.
Cade Sumbler was able to draw a two-out, full-count walk to load the bases but the home side was unable to collect any runs.
The Mountaineers added another run in the fifth on a double play with a runner on at third to widen their lead to 3-0.
Montgomery breathed life into the offense in the home half of the seventh with a sizzling liner down the third base line for a double. After advancing on a wild pitch, he would come home to score on an
Oscar Ponce RBI single to put UT Arlington on the board.
The Mavericks return to Clay Gould on Saturday, May 14 at 2 p.m. in game two of the final home series of the season against Appalachian State.
