Mavericks Drop Series Against App State

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington baseball (14-36, 6-20) was defeated 3-1 by the Appalachian State Mountaineers (18-28, 9-17) on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Michael Wong (L, 1-6) threw 7.0 innings for the Mavericks recording three strikeouts, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks.  Matt Novis worked two hitless frames collecting three strikeouts with one walk.

App State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a two-out rally in the first inning in which Wong was able to limit the damage, inducing an inning-ending fly out to strand three runners on base.

Despite not collecting a hit or run in the opening four innings, the Mavs were able to get six runners on base to push the opposing starter's pitch count to 59 pitches.

The Mountaineers were able to tally two additional runs in the top of the fifth to open a 3-0 lead.

Shortstop Cason Gregory was able to break up the no-hitter in the home half of the fifth inning with a single into left-center field.  Along with a pair of hit-by-pitches, UTA loaded the bases for senior Oscar Ponce to drive in the first run of the day with a sacrifice fly.

In his final two innings of work, Wong finished strong by retiring six consecutive batters on 23 pitches while collecting a swinging strikeout.

Novis took over in the eighth and continued to hold the visiting lineup in check, sitting down three of the last six batters on strikeouts after beginning his outing with a walk.

UTA will host Senior Day at Clay Gould Ballpark with their final home game of 2022 against Appalachian State on Sunday, May 15 at 1 p.m. with ceremonies beginning at approximately 12:40 p.m.
