Mavs Shut Out Mountaineers on Senior Day

ARLINGTON, Texas – With a complete game shutout, UTA Mavericks baseball (15-36, 7-20 SBC) were victorious 7-0 over App State (18-29, 9-18 SBC) on Senior Day at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Cade Winquest (W, 2-3) recorded a two-hit, 8.0 inning performance with five strikeouts and one walk.  Winquest was practically unhittable all day with minor blemishes coming in the form of deflected infield singles in the second and seventh innings.  David Moffat threw the ninth inning recording one strikeout and no walks, giving up two hits.

"Cade came within an eyelash of a no-no," head coach Darin Thomas said. "He was outstanding."

Zach Henry jump started the Mavericks offense in the first inning with a leadoff walk which led to him stealing second base.  Oscar Ponce deposited the game's first run with an RBI double that was sent down the first base line into the right field corner.

In the third, Ponce collected a single which Steven Saunders was able to capitalize on by lining a 2-0 pitch into right field and was scored as a single.  The ball was misplayed by the opposing right fielder allowing Ponce to score from first base and Saunders to advance to third on the play.  He would later score on a ground out to push the Mavericks advantage to 3-0.

Matt Lumsden led off the bottom of the sixth with a bang, launching a 383-foot home run into the trees beyond the right field wall to widen the home lead to 4-0.

A leadoff single in the seventh inning by Henry and subsequent advancements on wild pitches provided the spark for Mavs insurance runs.  Senior Boone Montgomery tallied an RBI on a sacrifice fly with Matthew Cavanagh and Tanner Rice each knocking in runs on RBI singles to put the game out of reach at 7-0.

"You couldn't tell our record was what it was by the attitude of the dugout and how we played today and that's a testament to these guys," Coach Thomas said. "They've been resilient all year long."
