ARLINGTON – UT Arlington's
Chendall Weaver has been named the Western Athletic Conference's Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week after the Mavericks guard posted a pair of double-figure scoring performances this past Thursday and Saturday.
Â
Over the course of two games last week, the 6-3 true freshman averaged 10.5 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 53.3 percent (8-15) from the floor in a pair of starts.
The Mansfield native began his week with 10 points and seven rebounds – his second most this year against a Division-I opponent – while also passing out two assists against Utah Valley on Jan. 5. All 10 of those points came in the 2nd half as UTA nearly stopped the nation's eighth-longest winning streak, which is now at 10 in a row for UVU.
Â
Two days later, the Mansfield Timberview High School product tallied 11 points and corralled six rebounds in a team-high-tying 34 minutes on Jan. 7 against Seattle U.
Â
Over his past seven games, Weaver is averaging 10 points per outing and has emerged as UTA's third-leading scorer this season at 8.4 a game.
Â
He is the second Maverick to earn WAC Freshman of the Week honors this season as
Brandon Walker collected the award on Dec. 5.
Â
Weaver and the Mavs return to action this week when they embark on arguably their most challenging road trip of the season as UTA faces the preseason top-2 teams in the WAC. It begins on Thursday, Jan. 12, at preseason favorite Grand Canyon before heading to New Mexico State – picked to finish 2nd – on Saturday, Jan. 14.
