RIVERSIDE, CALIF. ---
Brianna Ford nearly recorded the program's first triple-double in 13 years, but settled for leading the UT Arlington volleyball team (20-8, 9-6 WAC) to an 18-25, 25-17, 26-24, 18-25, 15-12 win over California Baptist (14-12, 7-8 WAC) inside the Van Dyne Gym Thursday night.
With the win, the Mavs clinched the fourth seed in next week's WAC tournament while also securing UTA's first 20-win season since 2019. In fact, it ties them for the second-most victories since 2006. They also achieved the win without four players, including three starters -
Alyssa Duran,
Kortney Puckett,
Jalie Tritt and
Samantha Glenn.
Ford hammered CBU with 24 kills, a .309 hitting percentage, 12 digs, a career-high nine blocks and an assist. In doing so, she finished just one block shy of becoming the first Mav since Bianca Sauls against Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 4, 2010 to record a triple-double.
The senior outside hitter, who also recorded 25 kills and 11 digs in an earlier meeting against CBU, notched her fourth straight and 10th double-double over her past 11 outings - a stretch in which she is averaging 18.1 kills, 13.2 digs, 4.7 blocks, 1.2 aces and 1.1 assists per match.
Moreover, Ford now has six career matches with at least 20 kills and 10 digs, including four this season alone. It was her ninth career 20+ kill performance, and she produced her 16th double-double of the season, as well as the 42nd of her career.
In the fifth set, the Mavs trailed 11-6 before scoring nine of the final 10 points. During an initial 4-0 run, Ford had a kill and a block while
Ava Burroughs secured her career-high 10th block of the match. After CBU responded to take a 12-10 lead, Ford and
Evyn Snook delivered kills over a three-point stretch, while
Sophie Skinner had a pair of aces to set up a pair of match points for the Mavs, who then got Ford's 24th kill for the win. The ball was initially called out but was reversed to a touch on replay.
Two others also had nice performances offensively, including
Paige Reagor (11 kills, .400) and
Sophie Ocampo (10 kills, .409). Reagor, who added four blocks, one assist and one ace, has 60 kills and just seven errors over the past five outings for a .558 hitting percentage. Ocampo's double-digit effort was the fourth of her redshirt freshman campaign.
Mollie Blank continued her tear through the WAC with a match-high 48 assists, 12 digs, three kills and two aces in what was her 10th consecutive outing with at least 33 assists. Her double-double was the third in the past four outings, her sixth of the season and the 28th of her career. The reigning back-to-back WAC setter of the week also tallied her 12th 40+ assist match of the season, and she has three-or-more kills in four straight outings.
In addition to Burroughs, Ford and Reagor - who combined for 23 blocks -
Briana Brown (7 kills, 4 digs, 3 blocks) also contributed to the win. Snook and
Alexis Bull each added three kills while Snook and Skinner also chipped in seven digs apiece.
Defensively,
Alli Wells had a team-high 13 digs one match after becoming the program's all-time leader.
The Mavs will conclude the regular season on Saturday at Grand Canyon at 5 p.m.
NOTES
Ford pushed her career kill total to 1,222, which puts her 24 shy of surpassing Fannie Burton (1,245, 1991-94) for 12th place on the program's all-time list. She also tied Shawn Sweeten (42) for the 11th-most double-doubles by a Mav.
UTA is now 2-1 all-time against CBU, which includes a season series sweep this year. This was the first time the Mavs have played on the road in the series.
