Wells breaks digs record, UTA sweeps Seattle U in best offensive performance since 1992

ARLINGTON --- On her final point inside the College Park Center, senior libero Alli Wells became the program's all-time career digs leader on Saturday as the UT Arlington volleyball team (19-8, 8-6 WAC) produced a 25-17, 25-13, 25-12 win over Seattle U (7-18, 2-12 WAC) in what was also the team's best offensive performance since 1992.

Wells, who served on match point, dug out the first attack of the point from Seattle U, which led to the match-winning kill from Briana Brown. It was the 2,034th career dig for the Waxahachie native, allowing her to break Alicia Shaffer's (2,033, 2008-11) record and set off a celebration inside the CPC.

Prior to the heroics from Wells, who finished with nine digs and five assists, the Mavs used a variety of runs to secure the team's first sweep since Oct. 7 against California Baptist. UTA got terminations from four different players during a 7-0 run to close the opening set, closed the ensuing set on a 15-4 run and used separate 5-1 and 5-0 runs in the third to set up a 24-12 lead with Wells sitting one dig shy of breaking the record, setting up the thrilling finish.

As a team, UTA hit .550 to produce the program's best offensive performance since Nov. 20, 1992 against UTSA (.562). In fact, it is the program's fourth-best hitting percentage in any match since 1985, and they are only the second team to even eclipse .500 since 1992. Overall, it was only the 10th time since 1985 that UTA hit at least .500 in a match.

Brianna Ford continued a fantastic stretch, producing 13 kills, 11 digs, a .435 hitting percentage and three blocks for her ninth double-double over the past 10 outings - a period in which she is now averaging 17.5 kills, 13.3 digs, 4.2 blocks, 1.3 aces and 1.2 assists.

In doing so, Ford also bumped her career termination total to 1,198, which puts her just two shy of becoming the 13th player in program history to reach the 1,200 milestone. Furthermore, she now has 41 career double-doubles, which breaks a tie with both Caley Smith and Amanda Aguilera for the 12th-most in program history since 1987.

In her third match back after missing some time, Brown added nine kills at a .333 clip along with one dig. Paige Reagor chipped in eight kills at a .727 clip with three blocks. Incredibly, over the past four matches, she has 49 kills and just four errors while hitting .600.

Jalie Tritt (eight kills, .545) and Kortney Puckett (seven kills, .875) also joined a group of six players to record at least six kills and hit over .300.

Mollie Blank added 37 assists, a season-best six kills and six digs in what was her eighth straight match with at least 33 assists. The reigning WAC setter of the week has also recorded at least one termination in 13 consecutive outings.

Evyn Snook chipped in a team-best two aces, three digs and a kill while Alyssa Duran added five digs.

Prior to the match, UTA honored six players and one staff member as part of senior day. Those recognized included Wells, Ford, Puckett, Duran, Blank and Brown on the player side while Kylee Kapp was also recognized after dedicating the past six years to the program - four as a player and the past two as a graduate assistant.

The Mavs improved to 4-1 all-time against the Redhawks while completing a season sweep of them.
