UTA Picks Up First Win of 2023 Season

Dill Records First Career Win as Head Coach

ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington softball team picked up its first win of the 2023 season Friday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over Texas Tech at Allan Saxe Field.

The Mavericks were originally scheduled to face Tulsa immediately after their match up against the Red Raiders but was postponed to Sunday at 12:30 p.m. due to wind chill.

With Friday's win, first-year head coach Kara Dill came away with her first career win as a head coach which marked UTA's first victory over TTU since 2018.

"Starting off the season with a win is huge," said Dill. "It sets the tone for the rest of the season. It's everything we've worked on at practice and although there's more work to do, it's a great start."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Texas Tech (W, 4-3)
Fifth year Kimber Cortemelia showed out in UTA's season opener after going 3-4 at the plate with two RBI. The infielder was responsible for the go-ahead run that put the Mavericks on top, leading to the 4-3 victory.

UTA's offense compiled six hits on the day as seniors Jadyn Erickson (1-4) and Reagan Hukill (1-2) came away with one hit each. Junior transfer Zaia Castruita wasted no time in making an impact in a UTA uniform after knocking in the Mavs' first run of the game.

Sophomore Jessica Adams earned her first start on the mound of the season as the righty allowed five hits across three innings. Freshman Tamya Waiters made her first collegiate appearance and went on to face 11 batters while striking out four. Junior Gracie Bumpurs picked up her first win after throwing to seven Red Raiders and allowing just one hit.
