ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington softball team now sits on an overall record of 2-1 after splitting day two of the Maverick Invitational Saturday at Allan Saxe Field.
The Mavs picked up their second win of the season after a gritty 4-3 win over Tulsa before falling to Texas Tech 4-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Tulsa (W, 4-3)
Fifth year
Kimber Cortemelia played a huge part in the Mavericks' 10 hits against the Golden Hurricane as she went 2-3 with an RBI. That placed the infielder at 5-7 heading into UTA's matchup against Texas Tech Saturday night.
Along with Cortemelia, fifth year
Sophie Wideman and freshman
Marley Neises logged two hits apiece as Wideman also had two RBI.
Sophomore
Jessica Adams picked up her first win in the circle of the 2023 season against Tulsa after throwing two innings and allowing just two hits. Freshman
Tamya Waiters and junior
Gracie Bumpurs made appearance and threw five innings combined.
PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Tulsa (W, 4-3)
- Both Tulsa's and UTA's bats were quiet through the first five innings until Wideman would be responsible for the first two runs of the game with an RBI-double to left center in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- The Golden Hurricane answered back in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead 3-2 after a triple from Celeste Wood cleared the bases.
- With bases loaded in the Mavericks' last at-bats, Cortemelia drew a walk that would tie things up 3-3. Senior Lindsey Franklin reached on a fielder's choice to third base that scored the winning run, defeating Tulsa 4-3.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Texas Tech (L, 4-0)
Unfortunately, not much action came from the Mavericks' offense as TTU's Sage Hoover came away with her first no-hitter of the season. UTA's bats struggled throughout the contest as the squad stranded just one base runner.
Sophomore Adams got the start in the circle against the Red Raiders as she went on to toss three scoreless innings limiting Tech's lineup to just one hit. After an overall solid performance from the righty, Adams came away with four strike outs.
Waiters and Bumpurs also shared time on the mound as Waiters threw to 15 batters across her three innings pitched. With UTA unable to get anything going, Bumpurs received her first loss of the season as she sits on a 1-1 record.
PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Texas Tech (L, 4-0)
- Through three scoreless innings, Texas Tech scored first in the top of the fourth inning off a solo home run from the bat of Abbie Orrick.
- The Red Raiders went on to extend their lead to 3-0 after an RBI-double and single in the top of the fifth inning.
- In the top of the seventh, TTU plated its final run of the game courtesy of a sacrifice fly to right field from Ellie Bailey.
- With UTA's difficulty to place more than one runner on base, that would be the Mavs' first loss of the season.
