UTA Bounces Back in Run-Rule Fashion

CELINA, Texas – With a combined shutout and an electric offense, the UT Arlington softball soared to a 10-0 run-rule victory over South Dakota Sunday in the final game of the Tracy Beard College Classic.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. South Dakota (W, 10-0)
The Mavericks' offense turned it around Sunday after the squad put up a whopping 10 runs off 12 hits.

Fifth year Sophie Wideman went a perfect 3-3 at the plate with one RBI. Kimber Cortemelia (2-3, 2 RBI) and Zaia Castruita (2-3) both came away with a multi-hit game to contribute to the double digit hit total.

Newcomers, Nikki Donahue and Paris Brienesse logged their first home run in a UTA uniform as Donahue smacked a solo shot and Brienesse with a grand slam.

Not only were the Mavs' bats on fire, but performances on the mound from Jessica Adams and Gracie Bumpurs were top-notch.

Throughout the five-inning game, the pair threw a combined shutout limiting the Coyote's lineup to just two hits. With Sunday's 10-0 victory, Adams was credited with her third win of the year.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. South Dakota (W, 10-0)
  • Aside from a double in the first and a single in the fourth, Adams and Bumpurs continued to keep South Dakota off balance for the whole game.
  • UTA scored first with a sacrifice fly to left field from the bat of Franklin that put the Mavs up 1-0 heading into the second inning.
  • The squad didn't stop there as Donahue racked her first career home run that extended the lead to 2-0. Cortemelia and Wideman tallied RBI-singles before Brienesse cleared the bases with a grand slam that placed the Mavericks in a sweet spot of 8-0.
  • The Mavs went on to place two additional runs on the board courtesy of two RBI-singles from Franklin and Cortemelia, leading to the 10-0 win.
