Mavs Fall in Extras; Walks-Off Against UTSA

SAN MARCOS, Texas – In an extra-inning battle with Texas State and a walk-off against UTSA, the UT Arlington softball team split the first day of the Texas State Classic Thursday from Bobcat Softball Stadium.
 
It was a full effort fight from the Mavericks in the nine-inning contest against former conference opponent, TXST, as it came down to just a one-run game. UTA carried its momentum into Thursday's second game against the Roadrunners that led to the team's sixth win of the season as the Mavericks sit on a overall record of 6-5.
 
Lefty Paris Brienesse continues to bring spark in head coach Kara Dill's lineup as the sophomore went 4-7 (.571) on the day coming away with two multi-hit games.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Texas State (L, 3-4) 9 Innings
The Mavericks and Bobcats were neck and neck throughout the game Thursday afternoon as the matchup went into extra innings.
 
UTA compiled eight hits as Brienesse (2-4) and Nicole Hill (2-3) led the way with two hits apiece. Senior Reagan Hukill and junior Morgan Westbrook were responsible for two RBI as the pair came away with one each.
 
The Mavericks' pitching staff of Jessica Adams, Gracie Bumpurs and Tamya Waiters all shared time in the circle against Texas State as Bumpurs earned her third start of the season.
 
Bumpurs went on to log three innings of work before Adams came in in the fourth inning. The sophomore kept Texas State off the board, limiting the Bobcat lineup to just two runs.
 
Freshman Waiters relieved Adams as she went on to throw the remainder of the game. Through 9 innings of battling on both sides, UTA fell to Texas State 3-4 giving Bumpurs the loss.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Texas State (L, 3-4) 9 Innings
  • After two scoreless innings, the Bobcats got on the board with one in the bottom of the third from a sacrifice fly courtesy of Sara Vanderford.
  • It was not long before UTA knotted things up at 1-1after Hukill knocked in Erickson at third with an RBI ground-out to third base.
  • In the top of the fourth, Lindsey Franklin led the Mavs off with a walk before advancing to third off a single to right field from Brienesse that placed runners at the corners for Westbrook. The junior placed a bunt perfectly past the pitcher that led Franklin across, taking the lead 2-1.
  • The Mavs were three outs away from defeating the Bobcats before an RBI-single through the right side from Piper Randolph tied things up in the bottom of the seventh at 2-2.
  • After both teams took advantage of a runner of second due to extra innings, the score was tied up yet again at 3-3 heading into the ninth inning.
  • Texas State's Ciara Trahan walked it off in the bottom of the ninth inning with an single to center as the Mavs fell 3-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. UTSA (W, 4-3)
Marley Neises, Zaia Castruita and Brienesse had solid performances at the plate after the trio came away with two hits each.
 
The Mavericks' four runs in Thursday night's matchup against the Roadrunners came from the bats of Hukill, Kimber Cortemelia, Castruita, and Franklin.
 
Righty Adams got the start against UTSA as she went on to throw four innings of work, limiting the Roadrunner lineup to two hits across 15 batters.
 
Waiters threw just one inning before Bumpurs came in relief. With UTA's 4-3 victory over UTSA, Bumpurs was credited the win.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. UTSA (W, 4-3)
  • UTSA's Kat Ibarra came out swinging in the top of the first as she ripped a triple to right center before a groundout to short allowed for her to score.
  • After a scoreless second inning, UTA answered back to tie it up 1-1 in the bottom of the third thanks to a single up the middle from Castruita.
  • The offense on both sides were quiet until the top of the sixth as the Roadrunners put two more on the board off a 2-run home run from Erykah Guerrero to take the lead 3-1.
  • The Mavericks tabbed a three-run seventh inning with the final run of the game coming from a bases-load walk from Franklin, leading the squad to a 4-3 win.
ON DECK
The Mavericks will open Friday action of the Texas State Classic with an 11 a.m. start against Kansas followed by a 1:30 p.m. matchup against Colorado State at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
