Jacobs Scores Game Winner At Buzzer In Thrilling Win Over Southern Utah

ARLINGTON, Texas --- Starr Jacobs scored on a tip-in as time expired on Monday inside the College Park Center to give the UT Arlington women's basketball team (10-13, 4-7 WAC) a thrilling 60-58 win over Southern Utah, who came into the game undefeated in conference play and riding a nine-game winning streak.

"What we did today was the result of us staying locked into the things we talked about as a staff and as a team," UT Arlington head coach Shereka Wright said. "I'm just very, very proud of my team and where we're headed."

The Lady Mavs were without three starters, including Shyia Smith, who had her streak of 36 consecutive starts snapped on Monday. She was the last remaining player on the team to have started every game this year.

With UT Arlington down four entering the final quarter, Kayla White scored seven consecutive points to complete an 8-0 run, which gave the Lady Mavs their first lead since 6:52 left in the opening quarter and set up a back-and-forth finish.

Moments later, Taleyah Jones scored seven straight points, punctuated by a 3-pointer with 4:19 remaining to give UT Arlington a 54-51 lead. Southern Utah answered back with four straight to re-take the lead, but White buried a pull-up jumper and Jacobs grabbed a steal before converting a fast break layup to give the Lady Mavs a 58-55 lead with 1:05 left.

Southern Utah's Cherita Daughterty then made three consecutive free throws to tie the game but missed the second of two free throws with 24 seconds left to give the Lady Mavs the final possession in a tie game.

After winding the clock down, Alexsyah Goudeau found Jacobs for a look under the hoop. Although she missed her initial attempt, she was able to follow the shot with the game-winner as the ball left her hands with 0.1 seconds left on the clock. After a review, officials confirmed the call on the court.

"I saw (Goudeau) and was really hoping she would see me," Jacobs said of the game-winning play. "So, when she passed it to me, I shot it. I think I was worried about (getting blocked). Everyone was like yelling on the bench, 'shoot it,' so I tipped it in. I was just out there, basically not quitting."

Jacobs, who left for a short time with 2:18 left after taking a hard fall, finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds, three steals, three assists and two blocks. It was her 11th career double-double, including a WAC-best fifth in conference play this year for the senior forward, who now sits just 32 points shy of reaching 1,000 career points.

White had a game and season-high 22 points along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. It was her 14th career game with 20-plus points. Meanwhile, Jones added 14 points and four rebounds. Including Jacobs, the trio combined for 51 of the team's 60 points. Goudeau also finished second on the team in rebounds with six, including three on the offensive glass.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Lady Mavs. Meanwhile, Southern Utah took their first loss since falling at Utah on Dec. 22. Five of their nine wins in conference play had come by single digits.

"I think this was the first game in a while that we all had fun," Jacobs said. "It's been tough for us. We just had a good time and played together, and it worked out for us."
