Women's Tennis Earns Victory over Drake at Home

ARLINGTON, Texas– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (8-2) defeated Drake 4-3 at the UTA Tennis Center on Wednesday.

The Mavericks dropped the doubles point to go down 0-1 at the beginning of the match.

Liz Chileno and Sarina Reinertsen fell 6-1 to Oriana Parkins-Godwin and Ines Stephani on Court 2. They still have the most doubles wins on the team, holding a 6-3 record.

Bruna Casasampere and Francisca Vergara retaliated to even the doubles score by taking the match on Court 3. They earned a 6-3 win over Elizabete Klavinska and Jyun-Yi Lee to move to 4-1 on the season.

Tara Gorinsek and Ana Paula Jimenez dropped their match on Court 1 to give Drake the early advantage. Mille Haagensen and Darinka Stepan defeated the pair 6-4, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead going into singles.

The Mavericks rebounded in singles play, coming back to win the match 4-3.

Chileno earned a deciding set victory to move to 7-1 on the spring season on Court 1. After Chileno took the first set 6-3, Stephani responded by winning the second set 6-0. In a decisive third set, Chileno did not drop a game and defeated Stephani 6-0.

Gorinsek also forced her match to a deciding set, but ultimately fell to Haagensen on Court 2. Gorinsek went up by one set after taking the first 6-4. Haagensen fought back to win the second set 6-3 and tie the score. In a close deciding set, Haagensen was too much for Gorinsek to overcome, winning 6-4.

Reinertsen earned a straight set victory on Court 3, defeating Stepan 6-2, 6-2. She now holds a 5-2 singles record for the spring season.

On Court 4, Casasampere earned another straight set victory for the Mavs and moved to 6-3 on the season. Casasampere went up one set after closing it out in a tiebreaker 7-6(7). She then continued the momentum into the second set, taking out Klavinska 6-3 for the match.

Jimenez took her first loss of the season on Court 5 to Parkins-Godwin in a tough deciding set. After Jimenez won the first set 6-0, Parkins-Godwin retaliated and took the second 6-3. She was too much for Jimenez to overcome in the third, winning 6-3 to add a point for the Bulldogs.

Vergara added another win for the Mavs on Court 6, where she defeated Lee in straight sets. She won 6-3, 6-3 and moved to 7-1 on the season.
