Women's Tennis Collects First WAC Win Over Abilene Christian

ABILENE, Texas– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (9-2, 1-0 WAC) defeated Abilene Christian 5-2 on Friday to earn their first Western Athletic Conference win of the season.
 
The Mavericks started off strong by taking the doubles point for the early lead.
 
Tara Gorinsek and Ana Paula Jimenez took care of business on Court 1, improving their record to 6-4 on the season. They defeated Masha Vrsalovic and Olivia Sears 6-2 to put the Mavs closer to the early advantage.
 
Bruna Casasampere and Francisca Vergara clinched the doubles point on Court 3 to put the Mavs up 1-0 going into singles play. Their record improved to 5-1 after beating Paula Garrote and Eva Arranz.
 
The Mavericks continued their success in singles play, dropping only two matches to the Wildcats.
 
Senior Liz Chileno earned her eighth win of the season in a deciding set over Vrsalovic. Vrsalovic dominated in the first set, defeating Chileno 6-0 for an early lead. Chileno battled back to take the second set 6-4, evening out the score. In the deciding set, Chileno dominated to close out the match 6-2, moving to 8-1 on the season.
 
Gorinsek defeated Sears in straight sets to move to 6-3 on the season. She earned a decisive 6-1, 6-1 win on Court 2 to give the Mavs another point.
 
Sarina Reinertsen followed up with a dominant performance on Court 3, not dropping a game to Maryjoe Crisologo. The 6-0, 6-0 win put Reinertsen at 6-2 for the season and 3-0 at the No. 3 position.
 
The Wildcats earned a point on Court 4, with Maria Cascos defeating Casasampere. Casasampere could not overcome Cascos, dropping her match 6-1, 6-1.
 
Jimenez put the Mavericks back in the win column with a deciding set win over Andrea Guerrero. After dropping the first set 6-2, Jimenez fought back to even the score with a 6-2 win to take the second. She took the third set in a similar fashion, winning 6-3 to secure the match.
 
Vergara fell in a close match on Court 6 to Arranz in her first loss of the season. She played a dominant first set, winning 6-1. Arranz fought back in a close second set, defeating Vergara 7-5. Arranz was too much to overcome in the third, taking the final set 6-1 for the match.
 
The Mavericks will be back in action on Sunday for their second WAC match. They will face Tarleton State at 1 p.m. at the Potishman-Lard Tennis Center in Stephenville, Texas.
