Despite Strong Start, UTA Falls in Final Game of Series

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Despite scoring early, the spark within the UT Arlington softball team extinguished in the final game of the three-game series against Southern Utah Saturday, suffering a 3-4 loss.

Despite its first loss of conference action, UTA clinched the series against the Thunderbirds with Friday's doubleheader sweep.

The Mavs move on to an 11-13 overall record and 2-1 in WAC play.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Southern Utah (L, 3-4)
Junior Morgan Westbrook led the way going 2-2 at the plate as Meagan Smith (1-3, 1 RBI), Reagan Hukill (1-4), Nicole Hill (1-2), Lindsey Franklin (1-1), Valerie Ornelas (1-3, 1 RBI) and Zaia Castruita (1-3) all came away with one hit apiece.

Freshman Tamya Waiters earned her third start on the mound as she tossed her first complete game of the season. The righty allowed four runs – three earned – off seven hits. Unfortunately, the Mavericks struggled to fight back, handing Waiters the loss.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Southern Utah (L,3-4)
  • UTA hit the ground running in its first at-bats as Hill led things off with a single to center before she stole second and third. Smith came in clutch with an RBI-single through the right side that brought across Hill. With the bases-loaded, Ashleigh Sgambelluri reached first on a hit-by-pitch that scored the Mavs' second run. Ornelas was responsible for putting UTA up 3-0 with an infield single.
  • With a UTA error and two walks, the Thunderbirds scored their first run off an RBI-single to center, making it 3-1 in the bottom of the third.
  • SUU made it a one-run game in the bottom of the fourth after a Maverick error and an infield single tied things up 3-3.
  • The Thunderbirds took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth from an RBI-single to the right center gap from the bat of Jayne Sepulveda.
  • UTA couldn't get any across in its final at-bats, falling to SUU 3-4.
