Historic Day For Mavericks Ends With Two Victories

HOUSTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (11-12, 3-3 WAC) picked up two big wins in what was a record setting day for the Mavs.

GAME ONE RECAP – UTA 9, NORTHWESTERN 8
The first game of the day for the Mavs saw them pitted against the Northwestern Wildcats. The game went 13 innings, the first extra innings game on the season for UTA.

Connery Peters (ND) got the start on the mound for the Mavs and went 5.0 solid innings, posting a new career high with nine strikeouts on the day. Peters gave up two runs on six hits. UTA used four pitchers in relief of Peters. Brayden Brooks (0.2 IP), Matt Novis (1.1 IP), Thomas Kuykendall (1.0 IP) and Zach Norris (5.0 IP).

Norris picked up the victory on the mound, giving up four hits and allowing no runs to score through his five innings of work and striking out four.

Offensively, UTA collected 14 hits with three home runs for the game. Ryan Black and Cade Sumbler each finished with three hits as well as one home run. Garrison Berkley and Tyson Pointer each finished with two hits, with Berkley driving in two runs and Pointer driving in one run. Ben Lumsden, Matt Cavanagh, Wilson Galvan, and Tyler Rice all finished with one hit.

In his first at bat in the bottom of the 1st, Ben Lumsden hit a home run to dead center field to put the Mavs up 1-0. UTA would add one more run before the 1st inning was over. Northwestern would plate two runs in the top of the 3rd to tie the game before the Mavericks would regain the lead in the bottom half of the inning. UTA would score one more run in the bottom of the 5th to go up 4-2.

The Wildcats would go on to plate one run in the 6th and three in the 7th to go up 6-5. UTA would respond with one run in the bottom half of the 7th. Northwestern scored one run in the top of the 8th before UTA would plate two in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game, 7-7.

Both teams would exchange runs in the 9th to force extra innings. The Mavs would end it in the bottom of the 13th with a walk-off base hit from Garrison Berkley to take the first game of the day by a final score of 9-8.

GAME TWO RECAP – UTA 15, HOUSTON 2
The bats really caught on fire in game two of the day for the Mavs, a game in which UTA set a new program record with eight home runs in a game, that coming in the first five innings. The record was set all the way back on April 10, 1993, when the Mavs belted seven long balls against Texas State.

It started early and often for the Mavs, with three home runs coming in the 1st inning off the bats of Garrison Berkley, Ryan Black, and Cade Sumbler.

The party continued in the 2nd with a Wilson Galvan long ball and Berkley hitting his second of the game in as many at-bats. Tyler Rice joined the party in the 3rd inning with a two-run homer to right center field.

Sumbler would go on to hit his second homer of the game in the top of the 4th, his third bomb of the day between the two games, to tie the record.

Ben Lumsden would break the record emphatically, launching a ball over the left field wall for a grand slam, putting the exclamation point on the afternoon for the Mavericks.

UTA would finish with 13 hits for the game. Sumbler wraps up the afternoon with three RBIs, Berkley with two RBIs, B. Lumsden with five RBIs, Galvan with two RBIs, Ty. Rice with two RBIs, and Black with one run driven in to round out the RBIs for UTA.

Gabe Starks (W, 3-0) got the start on the mound for the Mavericks going 5.0 innings and giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits and striking out three. Gray Bailey came in relief for Starks and went 2.0 innings, giving up no runs and no hits.
