Mavericks Move to 3-0 in WAC Play after Win Over Aggies

ARLINGTON, Texas– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (11-2, 3-0 WAC) earned their fifth consecutive win and third WAC win over New Mexico State on Friday at the UTA Tennis Center.

The Mavericks continued their success in doubles by taking the early lead with wins on Court 1 and 2. They are 3-0 in winning the doubles point for WAC matches so far.

Liz Chileno and Sarina Reinertsen took the first win on Court 2. They went up 2-0 to start, then allowed their opponents only two games for the remainder of the set. The pair defeated Miranda Bishard and Bella Nguyen 6-2 to move to 8-3 on the season.

WAC doubles team of the week Tara Gorinsek and Ana Paula Jimenez were the next off, clinching the doubles point on Court 1. After Gorinsek secured the first game of the match with an ace, the pair finished strong, defeating Anna Pinaieva and Lisa Zhu 6-2.

With the doubles point secured for the Mavs, Bruna Casasampere and Francisca Vergara could not overcome Valeriia Ivanovskaia and Dora Kurdi on Court 3. The Aggies earned an early lead in the set and were able to finish the match 6-3.

The Mavs carried the momentum from doubles into singles play, allowing the Aggies only one match.

Jimenez was the first to finish, defeating Bishard in a dominant fashion on Court 5. She took the first set handily with a 6-3 win, then proceeded to take the second in a similar manner. Jimenez allowed her opponent only one game in the final set after earning a 5-1 lead with a lob winner. The final score was 6-1, moving Jimenez to 9-1 on the season.

Reinertsen added another win to the scoreboard on Court 3. She defeated Ivanovskaia handily, taking the first set 6-2. The next set followed similarly, with Reinertsen earning points off forced errors to go up 5-1 in the second set. After winning several long rallies with Ivanovskaia, Reinertsen finished the second set 6-1.

Court 6 was the next off, with Vergara clinching the win for the Mavericks. She earned a solid 6-3 win for the first set over Nguyen. The next set was tighter, with the score going back and forth. Vergara was able to finish the set 7-5 to move to 9-2 on the season.

The Aggies earned their only point on Court 1, with Pinaieva defeating Chileno in straight sets. Chileno fought hard in the first set, forcing a tiebreaker at 6-6. She fell two points short, dropping the first set 7-6 (5). Pinaieva was too much for Chileno to overcome in the second set, winning 6-3 to put NMSU on the scoreboard.

Gorinsek retaliated by earning the next win on Court 2 over Zhu. She finished off the first set with a close 6-4 win. The second set was just as close, with Zhu forcing Gorinsek to run down several balls in long baseline rallies.

After Gorinsek took the 5-3 lead, a controversial call brought the game to deuce. Zhu was able to win the no-ad point after a long rally to bring the score back to 5-4. Gorinsek fought back by breaking Zhu's serve in the next game, forcing an error on match point to win 6-4.

Court 4 was the last to finish, ending the day with another victory for the Mavs. Casasampere defeated Natsuki Nishimura in a close first set 6-4. She then allowed Nishimura two games in the second, finishing off the match with a forehand winner to take the second 6-2.

The Mavericks are set to face WAC opponent Grand Canyon at 11 a.m. at the UTA Tennis Center on Sunday.
