Mavs Unable to Overcome Islanders in Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (9-6) could not overcome the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in their second match of the spring season. The Islanders earned a 4-2 victory at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Courts on Saturday.

The Mavericks started off the match strong by taking the doubles point, winning two out of three matches.

Anton Shepp and Solano Caffarena fell to Pascal Lorieul and Avery Zavala on Court 1. After defeating the pair of Islanders 6-4 in their previous match, Shepp and Caffarena could not overcome them, dropping the set 6-1.

Santiago Giamichelle and Dante Teramo fought back on Court 2 to bring the doubles score to 1-1. They played a dominant set against Nathan Schwartz and Lucas Schurdevin and earned a 6-1 victory, moving to 7-3 on the season.

Freshman duo Lachlan Robertson and Joan Torres Espinosa were able to complete the doubles victory with a win on Court 3. The pair defeated Tomas Quesada Perez and Matthieu Peres 6-3 to clinch the early lead.

The Islanders fought back in singles play, proving to be too much for the Mavs to overcome.

WAC Player of the Week Shepp fell to Zavala in straight sets on Court 1, after defeating him in the earlier matchup. Zavala came out strong and took the first set 6-2. Shepp fell short a break in the second set, falling 6-4.

Caffarena faced Lorieul for the first time this season on Court 2 and fell in two sets. Lorieul earned a 6-3 win in the first set, then played a dominant second set, allowing Caffarena one game for a final score of 6-1.

Giamichelle lost in a tight battle on Court 3 in his first match with Schwartz this season. The first set was decided by one break of serve, with Schwartz taking the 6-4 victory. Giamichelle retaliated in the second, coming back to even the score with a 6-4 victory.

The deciding set came down to two games, with the score staying even throughout. After a hard fought match, Schwartz proved too much for Giamichelle to overcome, taking the set and match with a 7-5 victory.

Espinosa also played out a deciding set, but ultimately fell to Peres on Court 4. He started the first set with a strong 6-1 victory over Peres. Peres fought back to take the second 6-3, then dominated in the third set, earning the 6-1 win for the match.

Robertson was the lone Maverick to earn a singles win in a decisive three-set victory over Schurdevin on Court 5. Schurdevin came out strong in the first set, winning 6-1 to go up in the match.

Robertson was not to be outdone, retaliating to take the next set 6-2 and even the score. He followed by playing a solid third set, earning another 6-2 victory for the win. The freshman moves to 9-3 on the season, having won three consecutive matches.

Teramo forced his match with Perez to a deciding set, but did not get to finish due to the Islanders clinching the overall win.

The Mavericks will be back at the UTA Tennis Center on Thursday to take on No. 44 ranked Oklahoma at 2 p.m.
