HOUSTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (12-13, 3-3 WAC) fell to the Houston Cougars (12-12) in a slugfest on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 18-9 at Schroeder Park.
Offensively, the Mavs plated nine runs on 11 hits as a team led by
Ben Lumsden who finished with four hits, two coming via doubles, in five at-bats and drove in two runs. The four hits establish a new career high for Lumsden.
Ryan Black and
Tyler Rice each finished with two hits, with Black driving in two and Ty. Rice driving in one run.
Garrison Berkley,
Reed Thomas, and
Tanner Rice all finished with one hit. Ta. Rice drove in two runs while Thomas had one RBI.
Cade Sumbler concluded his game with one RBI on a bases loaded walk.
UTA used four pitchers on the afternoon, with
Caden Noah getting the start on the mound. Noah went 4.0 innings, giving up seven runs on 10 hits while punching out four Houston batters.
Bryce Hackett (L, 0-3) came in relief of Noah and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing seven runs, four of them earned, on four hits.
Joe Steeber went 1.1 innings, surrendering two runs on three hits.
Harrison Hammond would round out the pitching for the Mavs, going 1.0 inning and giving up two runs on three hits.
The Mavericks struck big in the top of the 4th inning, plating six runs, five coming with two outs, on five hits. The scoring started thanks to a
Reed Thomas single to right field to bring in
Ryan Black. With the hit, it gives Thomas his first RBI in a Maverick uniform.
Tanner Rice singled to center field to score Thomas and
Tyler Rice, marking Ta. Rice's first two RBIs of the season.
Ben Lumsden would smash a ball off the right field wall to drive in Ta. Rice and
Wilson Galvan. The Mavs would load the bases and score one more run thanks to a
Cade Sumbler walk to end the scoring in the inning for the Mavs. This would give the Mavs a 6-3 lead before the Cougars would score four runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 7-6.
Houston would go on to score one run in the bottom of the 5th to go up by two. UTA would go on to respond in the top of the 6th, scratching across three runs to go up one run, 9-8. A
Ryan Black single to center would score
Ben Lumsden and
Garrison Berkley.
Tyler Rice smacked a homer to right field, his third of the year, to round out the scoring for UTA. Houston would counter, scoring six runs in the bottom of the 6th to go up and never let go of the lead.
With the loss, the Mavs four game winning streak is snapped.

The Mavs will welcome the TCU Horned Frogs to Clay Gould Ballpark for a midweek game on Tuesday, March 28, before travelling to Seattle for the Mavs third conference series of the season on March 31-April 2 as they take on the Redhawks of Seattle U.
