NATCHITOCHES, La. – The UT Arlington baseball team clinched the series win with a 5-2 victory over Northwestern State at Brown-Stroud Field on Sunday afternoon.
The UTA bullpen was lights out, giving up only 1 hit in 4.1 innings of work, while striking out 6 NSU batters. Offensively, it was the
Ryan Black and
Garrison Berkley show as they accounted for all of UTA's runs.
The Mavs used 4 pitchers in the effort. Starting pitcher
Caden Noah was able to give his team 4.2 quality innings of work for a no decision. He gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 3.
Noah had a no-hitter going through 3 innings of work, before running into trouble in the bottom of the fourth, giving up 1 run on 3 hits. He worked out of that inning, stranding 2 runners on base. To start the fifth, the Demons singled up the middle off Noah and then hit a double to score their last run of the game. Noah recorded 2 outs before being pulled from the game, exiting with 2 runners on base.
Matt Novis would enter the game in relief of Noah, inheriting 2 runners on base, Novis would strand them there as he would induce a pop fly to left field. He would go on to strike out the side in the bottom of the sixth inning. Novis picked up the win, moving him to 1-1 on the season.
Zach Norris went 2 innings, giving up no runs, 1 hit and striking out 2 would be batters.
Connery Peters closed the door on the Demons, picking up his 3rd save of the year in 1 inning of work, giving up no hits, walking none and striking out 1.
Berkley got things started with a solo homerun to straight away left field in the top of the second inning to give the Mavs a 1-0 lead and they never looked back, never trailing in the game.
Black followed things up by driving in
Matt Cavanagh and
Ben Lumsden on a double to right center field to put the Mavs up 3-0.
Berkley drove in Black on a single to left field in the top of the sixth inning to put the Mavs up 4-2. In the top of the eighth, Black added 1 more insurance run with a no doubt homerun to right field, his second in as many games.
Lumsden,
Tyson Pointer and
Steven Saunders would round out the rest of the offense for the Mavericks, each finishing with 1 hit apiece.
