Box Score FORT WORTH, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team picked up a huge win on the road, downing No. 10 TCU by a final score of 8-7.
This is the first time since 2016 that UTA has beaten a top-10 opponent on the road, which also came at TCU who was No. 5 at the time. It's the first top-10 win since 2017, which came against No. 4 Texas Tech.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
UTA finished with 11 hits on the evening, drove in 7 runs as a team and scored 8 runs total.
Tyson Pointer finished with 2 RBI's on 1 hit, a big homerun to start us off.
Matt Cavanagh drove in 2 runs on 2 hits.
Ryan Black finished with 2 hits and drove in 1 run.
Both
Ben Lumsden and
Cason Gregory each finished with 1 hit and drove in 1 run apiece.
Cade Sumbler and
Tyler Rice both finished with 2 hits apiece on the evening. Rice scored 3 runs on the night.
The Mavericks used 9 pitchers on the night, with
Gray Bailey picking up the win, his 1st of the year, and
Connery Peters picking up his 4th save on the season.
PLAY BY PLAY
Ryan Black doubled down the left field line.
Tyson Pointer homered to left field on the first pitch he saw, driving in Black, to start off the scoring for us in the top of the first inning.
Cade Sumbler leads off the top of the second with a double,
Wilson Galvan bunts him over to third.
Cason Gregory bunts for a base hit, scores Sumbler.
Tyler Rice hits a high chopper to first base and beats it out for a base hit, Gregory advances to second.
Matt Cavanagh singles up the middle, driving in Gregory to make it 5-0.
TCU drives in 1 on a double to right field in the bottom of the third inning to make it 5-1
UTA responds and plates 2 runs to make it 7-1.
Tyler Rice struck out, reached first on the dropped strike and errant throw by the catcher, advanced all the way to third. Cavanagh singled to right field to drive in Rice. Cavanagh advanced to second on a wild pitch then advanced to third on another wild pitch. Black singled up the middle after a
Ben Lumsden walk to score Cavanagh.
TCU homers to straight away center field to cut UTA's lead 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Joseph Steeber escapes a jam, stranding 2 TCU runners on base to keep the UTA lead intact.
In the top of the sixth inning, Rice singles to right field. He advanced to second on a balk. Cavanagh grounded out to second, moving Rice to third. Rice then scores on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Gage Singer and the Mavs escape a jam, inducing a double play to end the threat.
TCU would score runs in the final 3 innings to makes things interesting. In the bottom of the seventh inning, TCU scores 3 runs to cut UTA's lead down to 8-5. In the bottom of the eighth, TCU plates 1 run to make it 8-6.
The first batter of the ninth hit a towering ball that the umpires ruled foul. After a long review, the call stood, and
Connery Peters struck out the TCU hitter on the very next pitch for the first out of the inning. Peters forces a groundout to the shortstop for the second out of the inning before striking out the final batter for TCU to earn the Mavs the victory.
UP NEXT
WAC play starts for the Mavericks this weekend as they travel to Stephenville, Texas to take on Tarleton. The Texans are 10-3 on the year, coming into the series riding a 4-game win streak and are a perfect 8-0 at home. First pitch for Friday is slated for 6:30 pm, while Saturday's start time is scheduled for 3 pm and the series finale on Sunday is scheduled for a 1 pm start.
