ARLINGTON, Texas– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (7-4) swept Lamar 7-0 in their Sunday match at the UTA Tennis Center.
The doubles point came down to the last court after the Mavericks and Cardinals split matches.
Lachlan Robertson and
Joan Torres Espinosa were the first team to finish after dominating on Court 3. After breaking Lamar's serve to go up 1-0, the pair cruised through the rest of the match. Torres hit an overhead smash to get the double-break and go up 3-0. Robertson's serve helped the Mavs go up 4-0 after he hit an ace to win the game. At 5-1, he was able to close out the match after a forced error from Lamar to earn the 6-1 victory.
Anton Shepp and
Solano Caffarena fell in a tough match on Court 1. The two were able to force Lamar's serve to deuce in the first game, but dropped it to go down 0-1. Lamar then broke and held serve in the next game to go up 3-0 after a volley winner. Caffarena forced an error to put the Mavs on the scoreboard at 3-1. The Cardinals were too much to overcome, ultimately winning the set 6-2.
The early advantage came down to
Dante Teramo and
Santiago Giamichelle on Court 2. After losing the first game of the set in a no-ad point, the two were able to hold serve and tie at 1-1. Teramo finished the next game with a winner to break Lamar's serve and go up 2-1. The Cardinals retaliated and broke back, putting the match back on-serve at 3-2.
Giamichelle stepped up to tie the score at 4-4. In his service game, he forced an error then hit an ace and a winner for the Mavs. The team then went up 5-4 after Teramo forced an error to break. An overhead, forced error and volley winner helped the two clinch the early lead for the Mavericks with a final score of 6-4.
The Cardinals put up a fight in singles, but the Mavericks were able to come out victorious by taking the next six matches.
Giamichelle was the first player off the court with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Joan Crespo at the No. 3 position. At 1-1, Giamichelle forced an error in order to go up 2-1. After holding the next service game and going up 3-1, he finished the first set off with a clean winner.
The second set started in a similar manner, with Giamichelle breaking for the first game and going up 1-0. He earned the double break off a forehand winner to go up 3-0. Crespo fought back and broke serve to make the score 5-4, but Giamichelle was too much to overcome and finished the second set 6-4.
Caffarena was the next to finish after securing a straight set win over Filippo Salsini on Court 3. After going down a break, he was able to break back to go up 3-2 after a forced error from Salsini. He then forced another error to win the first set 6-3.
The second set went back-and-forth as both players stayed on-serve. Caffarena was able to break at 4-4 to go up, then served for the match. He ended the second set at 6-4.
Robertson continued the Maverick's success with another straight set win on Court 4. After going back-and-forth with Max Milic, he was able to earn the break off a forced error and go up 4-3. He then forced another error at 5-4 to secure the first set win 6-4.
After going up 2-0 in the second set, Robertson felt the pressure from Milic as he was able to bring the score back to 4-4. Robertson broke back and hit a forehand winner to go up 5-4. He then served out the match, earning a 6-4 victory.
Shepp followed with a win on Court 1, improving his record to 9-2 for the season. Max Amling took the first set 6-3 after breaking Shepp's serve at 2-2. Shepp fought hard in the first, serving three aces while down 4-2, but he was unable to hold off Amling.
Shepp retaliated in the second set, getting the early break to go up 1-0. With two aces to go up 2-0 followed by a forced error to go up 4-2 later in the set, Shepp was able to finish the set 6-4 with a volley winner and tie the match at one set apiece.
The deciding set followed in a similar manner, with Shepp breaking for the first game. After an ace to go up 2-0, he earned the double break and took the 3-0 lead. Finishing with an ace, Shepp closed out the deciding set at 6-2.
Teramo pulled out a win on Court 5 next, finishing the second set in a tiebreaker. After a break and a hold to go up 3-2 in the first set, he was able to force an error to go up 4-2. Brandon Do earned one more game, the Teramo finished off the set 6-3.
As the pressure grew in the second set, Teramo fought hard to win after losing a four game lead. Do forced a tiebreaker at 6-6, which came down to a few points. At 8-8, Teramo was able to win the next two points and finish the second set 7-6 and tiebreaker 10-8.
Ricardo Alban ended the day with a win on Court 6, earning his second win of the spring season. The first set against Haruki Omori-Cowie was tight, with Alban forcing the tiebreaker. He finished off the first set with an overhead and ended the tiebreaker with a score of 8-6.
Alban took the second set after breaking Omori-Cowie's serve 6-4. He finished with an overhead and an ace to secure the sweep for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks will travel to College Station on Monday to face Texas A&M at 6 p.m. Their next match at the UTA Tennis Center will be on Thursday against Furman at 2 p.m.
