Softball Logs Record-Breaking Attendance; Suffers Loss to #10 Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas – With a record-breaking attendance at Allan Saxe Field Wednesday night, the UT Arlington softball team moved on to a 9-12 overall record after suffering a 12-3 loss to No. 10 Texas.
 
In head coach Kara Dill's first season at the helm, the midweek matchup's attendance of 810 marks the most in program history.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. #10 Texas (L, 12-3)
UTA put up just three hits in Wednesday night's matchup against #10 Texas as Sophie Wideman (1-3, 1 RBI), Reagan Hukill (1-3, 1 RBI) and Morgan Westbrook (1-3, 1 RBI) came away with one hit each.
 
Fifth year Wideman launched her third home run of the 2023 season as the other two came from the Mavericks' game against #16 Kentucky (2/17/23) in the Tracy Beard College Classic and Colorado State (2/24/23) in the Texas State Classic.
 
Junior Gracie Bumpurs moved on to a 3-5 overall record in the circle this season, receiving her fifth loss. The righty threw just a little over two innings for the Mavs, coming away with three strike outs.
 
Sophomore Jessica Adams made an appearance in the top of the third as she went on to toss 3.1 innings allowing four runs off four hits.
 
Freshman Tamya Waiters faced just six Longhorns and tossed the final inning.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. #10 Texas (L, 12-3)
  • The Longhorns grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second off an RBI-double from Bella Dayton.
  • The Mavs quickly tied things up in the bottom of the second after Hukill reached first off a walk before stealing second base. Westbrook came in clutch with an RBI-triple down the right field line that made it 1-1.
  • Bumpurs held Texas to just one run through two innings before the Longhorns launched back-to-back home runs from Katie Cimusz and Baylea Brandon to take the lead 5-1.
  • Cortemelia drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth as Hukill knocked her in with an RBI-double to right center to cut the deficit down to three.
  • Texas fired back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth off a solo shot and a sacrifice fly that made it a 7-2 ball game.
  • A UTA throwing error allowed for the Longhorns to plate their eighth run of the game followed a ground-out RBI that extended Texas' lead 9-2.
  • Wideman tabbed her third home run of the season with a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth that added one more to the board for UTA.
  • A three-run seventh inning for Texas extended its lead 12-3 off a bases-clearing double from the bat of Ashton Maloney.
  • UTA's bats went cold, unable to fight back falling to the ranked Longhorns 12-3.
ON DECK
The Mavericks will turn their attention to the first conference series at Southern Utah with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Friday, Mar. 17 followed by the final game of the three-game series Saturday, Mar. 18.
