Career Day From Pointer Helps Propel Mavs Past The Redhawks In High Scoring Affair

SEATTLE, Washington – On a gusty Saturday afternoon at Bannerwood Park, the UT Arlington baseball team (13-15, 4-4 WAC) defeated the Seattle U Redhawks (6-17, 4-6 WAC) in a high-scoring game 17-10.

The Mavs bats were hot, collecting 20 hits in 45 at-bats and scoring 17 runs on the afternoon.

Tyson Pointer led the way offensively for the Mavs, driving in a team-high and career-high five runs off three hits and scoring two runs. He hit his fourth home run of the year and smacked his team leading 12th double of the season. Garrison Berkley tied his career high with four hits, driving in three runs and finishing a home run shy of the cycle. Ryan Black finished with three runs driven in on two hits.

Zach Henry smashed his first home run of the season to straight away canter field and smacked a double to finish with two hits and two RBIs for the game. Cade Sumbler drove in two runs on three hits while Wilson Galvan finished with three hits and one run driven in. Ben Lumsden drove in one run on a sacrifice fly and Reed Thomas finished with one hit to round out the offensive output for the Mavericks.

Connery Peters got the start on the mound for UTA, going 3.0 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking two. Thomas Kuykendall came in relief of Peters and went 2.2 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits and striking out one.

Jack Hagan (W, 4-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing a strong 3.1 innings and surrendering one run on four hits while punching out five batters and walking one.

UTA struck early, plating three runs in the 1st inning, thanks in part to a Tyson Pointer three-run home run to left field that left the field of play in a hurry. Seattle U would go on to take the lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning, plating four runs and tacking on two more runs in the bottom of the 3rd to go up 6-3.

The Mavs would respond with a three-run 4th to tie the game up at six runs apiece. UTA would go up two runs in the top of the 5th inning before the Redhawks would regain the lead with a three-run bottom of the 5th to go up 9-8.

UTA would explode for four runs in the 6th to retake the lead, 12-9, and never looked back. The Mavs would go on to add four more runs in the 8th inning and one more run in the top of the 9th to round out the scoring for the Mavs on the afternoon. The Redhawks would plate one run in the bottom of the 9th but would do no more damage.

With the win, UTA halted their three-game skid and brought their conference record back to even.
