PHOENIX– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (13-7, 4-0 WAC) earned their fourth conference win at the GCU Tennis Facility with a 7-0 sweep over Grand Canyon on Friday. They remain first in the WAC standings and undefeated in conference play.
The doubles point came down to a close match on Court 3, with the Mavericks taking the win to secure the early advantage.
The Lopes got off to a strong start, taking out
Anton Shepp and
Solano Caffarena on Court 1. David Wekesa and William Alsterback finished off the match 6-2 to give GCU a doubles win.
Santiago Giamichelle and
Dante Teramo responded by taking the next match over Martim Marujo and Paolo Rosa on Court 2. The 6-4 win evened the score, with the doubles point coming down to Court 3.
Lachlan Robertson and
Joan Torres Espinosa secured the lead with a tiebreaker win over Wyatt Anderson and Mattia Ghedin. In a tight match, the Mavs prevailed and took the set 7-6 (6) for the 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
Singles action followed in a similar manner, with the Mavericks taking all six courts to complete the sweep.
Espinosa was the first to finish, moving back into the win column with a victory over Alsterback on Court 6. He did not drop a game in the first set, earning a 6-0 victory. He took the next set 6-2 to put the Mavericks up by two points in the match.
Shepp continued the momentum with another win on Court 1, dropping only two games as well. He took the first set 6-2 over Jonathan Da Silva, then followed with a 6-0 win to take the match.
Court 4 finished next with a straight-set win from Robertson over Wekesa. Robertson took the first set, winning 6-4 by one break of serve. He finished up the match without dropping another game, taking the second set 6-0.
Teramo followed up with another straight-set victory on Court 5, defeating Rosati. In a close first set, Teramo pulled out the 7-5 victory. He continued the momentum in the second set with another 6-0 win for the Mavericks, earning the fourth win and clinching the match for the Mavs.
Court 2 came down to a tiebreaker, with Giamichelle edging out the win over Marujo. After Giamichelle took the first set 6-3, Marujo responded by taking the second 6-3. With the match already clinched, the victory came down to a tiebreaker, where Giamichelle secured the 10-5 victory.
Caffarena followed with another tiebreaker victory in a close match with Alfred Almasi on Court 3. Almasi won the first set by a break 6-4, then Caffarena retaliated in the second with a 6-4 victory. The final set tiebreaker came down to a few points, with Caffarena closing out the match 10-8.
The Mavericks will be back in action on the road to take on Seattle U on Sunday in Seattle. The time has not yet been announced.
