Mavs Claim Series Over Lumberjacks In Dominating Fashion

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (21-19, 11-7 WAC) clinched the series win with an 11-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin (18-19, 11-10 WAC) at Jaycees Field on a cool Sunday afternoon.

Offensively, the Mavericks belted out 14 hits while the pitching staff limited the Lumberjacks to just five hits total for the game. The Mavs scored runs in six out of the nine innings played.

Wilson Galvan went 2-4 with a three-run home run and a double to go along with two walks while scoring twice. Ryan Black finished 2-5 with three RBIs for the game as well.

Garrison Berkley went 3-4 with one RBI and drew two walks on the game while scoring four runs which led the Mavs offense.

Tyson Pointer, Matt Cavanagh, and Tyce Armstrong each finished with two hits on the game. Cavanagh and Armstrong each had a double and one RBI to round out their afternoon. Ben Lumsden finished with one hit to round out the Mavs offensive output.

UTA used four pitchers in the contest, with Caden Noah getting the start on the mound. Noah went 3.0 innings in his first start since April 8 to pick up the victory. He allowed two runs on three hits while punching out three on 56 pitches.

Andrew Lucas relieved Noah, going 2.0 innings and allowing one run on one hit and striking out one on 29 pitches. In relief of Lucas, Thomas Kuykendall pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one hit and no runs.

Gray Bailey closed out the game for the Mavs, tossing a strong 3.0 innings in relief. Bailey didn't allow a hit and the only base runner to reach came via his lone walk. He also rang up four batters in his outing.

After one inning of play, the Mavs and Jacks each scratched across one run before Galvan blasted his three-run homer in the top of the 2nd to give UTA a 4-1 lead and they never looked back.

UTA plated two more runs in the top of the 3rd. Lumsden got things started with a single up the middle and proceeded to steal second. The inning was capped off with back-to-back doubles from Cavanagh and Armstrong to give the Mavs a 6-1 lead.

SFA plated one run in the bottom of the 3rd with UTA responding by getting that run back in the top of the 4th thanks to a Black sacrifice fly that scored Berkley to bring the score to 7-2. The Mavs plated one more run in the 5th to go up six, 8-2.

The Jacks scored their final run in the 6th with UTA answering back, scoring three in the 7th thanks to a two-run single off the bat of Black that scored Berkley and Rice. The runs were topped off thanks to an error by the SFA third baseman that allowed Galvan to score to make it an 11-3 game.

The Jacks were unable to record another hit for the remainder of the game.
