ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (22-20, 12-8 WAC) fell to the UTRGV Vaqueros (24-17, 10-10 WAC) in game two of a three-game WAC series on Saturday afternoon, 11-2, at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks finished with seven hits on the day.
Wilson Galvan led UTA with two hits while scoring one run.
Tyson Pointer and
Steven Saunders each recorded one hit and one RBI on the game.
Garrison Berkley,
Cade Sumbler and
Matt Cavanagh all finished with one hit to round out the offensive output for the Mavs.
Connery Peters got the start on the mound for the Mavs, going 6.0 full innings. He gave up six runs off 12 hits, while striking out two. Peters was tabbed with the loss. UTA used two arms out of the bullpen, with
Jack Hagan coming in relief of Peters. Hagan went 1.2 innings, surrendering five runs off seven hits.
Gage Singer finished the game for the Mavs, going the final 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and punching out two Vaquero batters.
UTRGV scored early, plating one run in the 2nd and three runs in the 3rd to go up 4-0.
The Mavs cut into the deficit in the 4th, thanks to a Pointer base hit through the left side to score Galvan from second. Galvan reached base via a single through the right side and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
The Vaqueros would plate runs in the 5th and 6th to push their lead up to five runs, 6-1.
Both teams scored in the 7th inning, with the Vaqueros pushing across three runs before the Mavs responded with one run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to a Saunders single to right center to score Sumbler, making it a 9-2 ball game.
UTRGV would go on to add two more runs in the top of the 8th to make it an 11-2 game, ending the scoring for both teams.
