SEATTLE– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (13-3, 5-1 WAC) took their first conference loss to Seattle 4-3 on Sunday at the Amy Yee Tennis Courts.
The Mavericks lost the doubles point in a close match, losing the one-point advantage in the match.
Nika Novikova made her conference debut with
Sarina Reinertsen on Court 3. The pair defeated Jade Quintana and Shuanghui Huang 6-1 to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in doubles play.
The Redhawks retaliated on Court 1 by taking the next match over
Tara Gorinsek and
Ana Paula Jimenez. Elena Kraleva and Liliya Dimova earned a 6-2 win to even the score.
The early advantage came down to Court 2 to a battle between
Bruna Casasampere and
Francisca Vergara and Mireia Fehr and Lola Tavcar. In a tight set, the Redhawks came out victorious, earning a 7-5 win for the doubles point.
In a tight singles competition, the Mavericks could not overcome the Redhawks after coming back from the doubles deficit.
Vergara earned a straight-set victory over Huang on Court 6 to even the score. She only allowed Huang one game with a 6-0, 6-1 victory to move to 12-2 on the season.
Jimenez followed on Court 5 with a victory over Quintana to put the Mavs up 2-1. Quintana earned one game during the match, with Jimenez winning 6-1, 6-0. She holds a 12-1 record for the season.
On Court 3, Reinertsen took the next win over Tavcar in straight sets to give the Mavs a two-point lead. She moved to 11-2 on the season after taking the 6-1, 6-3 win.
The Redhawks retaliated to earn the next three points to win the match. On Court 4, Marija Elenova defeated Casasampere 6-4, 6-2 to bring the score to 3-2.
In a tough battle on Court 1,
Liz Chileno fell to Kraleva in a deciding set to even the match. After dropping the first set 6-4, Chileno fought back to win the next set 6-4. She could not overcome Kraleva in the third set, falling 6-2.
The match came down to Court 2 between Gorinsek and Dimova in a tight deciding set. Gorinsek took the early lead by winning the first set 6-4. Dimova evened the score in the second set, forcing a tiebreaker and winning 7-6(4). Gorinsek forced another tiebreaker in the third, falling short 7-6(4).
The Mavericks will be back in the UTA Tennis Center on Saturday to take on UT Rio Grande Valley at 11 a.m.
