ARLINGTON, Texas– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (14-3, 6-1 WAC) defeated UT Rio Grande Valley 4-3 for their sixth conference win on Saturday at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks earned a victory on each doubles court for the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Bruna Casasampere and
Francisca Vergara were the first court off, earning a solid victory over Daniela Rosenberger and Stefanie Wilske on Court 3. The match stayed close, with both teams hitting aggressively from the baseline until 3-3. Casasampere forced an error to go up 4-3, then the pair finished off the next two games to earn the 6-3 win.
Tara Gorinsek and
Ana Paula Jimenez followed with another win on Court 1 over Lea Karren and Barbara Martinez. Strong net play allowed the duo to go up early in the match at 2-1. An overhead from Gorinsek helped the Mavs go up 5-2 before the Aggies made a run to tighten the score.
With the Mavericks up 5-4, Gorinsek and Jimenez needed a break to win the match. After a long rally on a deuce point, an overruled out call gave the Mavs the match with a final score of 6-4. This marks Gorinsek and Jimenez's tenth win of the season as they move to 5-2 in conference play.
Liz Chileno and
Sarina Reinertsen completed the sweep with a victory over Isabelle Bahr and Marjorie Souza on Court 2. After going down 3-2, the pair fought back to earn the 4-3 lead. The score went back and forth until 5-5, when the Mavs were able to earn two games to complete the victory 7-5.
The Aggies fought back in singles play, but the Mavericks finished strong and earned three matches for the win.
Jimenez started off strong on Court 5 and earned her seventh consecutive win and sixth in straight sets. The match with Wilske started off close, tied at 3-3. Jimenez took the next two games to go up 5-3, then finished off the set 6-3.
She proceeded to take the third set in a dominant fashion without dropping a game. She went up 3-0 early on in the set, then won the next three games for the 6-0 victory and to move to 13-1 on the season.
The Aggies retaliated on Court 4 to take the next match over Casasampere. Casasampere went down early in the first set to Martinez at 3-1. She fought back to even the score at 3-3, then went up 5-4. Martinez responded by taking the next three games for the set 7-5.
Martinez was too much to overcome in the second set, earning a 2-0 lead to start. Casasampere earned one game before Martinez finished off the match 6-1.
Gorinsek responded with a straight set win on Court 2 over Bahr to put the Mavericks at 3-1. She allowed Bahr one game in the first set, going up 5-1. She finished off the first set with an ace to win 6-1.
The second set was tighter, with Bahr fighting hard to keep the score close. After Gorinsek went up 4-2, Bahr rallied from the baseline in order to bring the score to 5-4. Another long rally on a deuce point gave Gorinsek the match 6-4.
Reinertsen fell next on Court 3 to Souza in her first conference loss of the season. Souza went up early in the first set, going up 3-1. Reinertsen battled to bring the score to 4-3, then evened it at 4-4. Souza was too much to overcome in the final games of the set, taking the 6-4 victory.
The second set followed in a similar manner, with Reinertsen going down early at 3-1. Souza went up 5-1 near the end when Reinertsen fought to earn two more games. She could not complete the comeback, with Souza taking the 6-3 victory to put the Vaqueros at 3-2.
Vergara retaliated on Court 6, earning a straight-set victory over Rosenberger to clinch the victory for the Mavs. She started off with a strong 6-3 victory to take the first set.
Rosenberger came out strong in the second, earning a 2-1 lead to start off. Vergara won two consecutive games to go up 3-2, then proceeded to keep the rest of the set close. At 5-4, aggressive baseline shots helped Vergara go up in the game. She finished off with an ace for the 6-4 victory and to move to 13-2 on the season.
The final match came down to Court 1, with a battle between Chileno and Karren in the deciding set tiebreaker. Chileno came out strong in the first set, going up 5-3 with an overhead. Karren fought to even the score at 5-5, then Chileno won the next game to go up 6-5. Karren forced a tiebreaker, bringing the score to 6-6. Chileno fell by two points in the tiebreaker after double faulting to go down 6-5, with the final score 7-6 (5).
Chileno responded to the close loss with a dominant second set, allowing Karren only one game before taking the victory. A clean winner helped Chileno go up 5-1, then forced an error of a serve to win the set 6-1.
With the Mavericks having already won the match, the final score came down to a third set tiebreaker. Chileno earned an early lead to go up 5-2, then two double faults allowed Kerren to even the score. Kerron then went up 7-5 and allowed Chileno two more points before taking the tiebreaker 10-7.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday to take on University of North Texas at 2 p.m. in Denton.
