Mavericks Sweep Aggies on Senior Day in Last Home Match

ARLINGTON, Texas– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (12-7, 3-0 WAC) took down their third WAC opponent New Mexico State in a 7-0 sweep on Senior Day on Saturday. Each of the three seniors earned a victory against the Aggies to mark their final match of the season at the UTA Tennis Center.
 
Anton Shepp and Solano Caffarena started off strong by taking the first doubles win on Court 1. Shepp hit a forehand winner to help the pair earn the early break over Yehor Opanasenko and Jordy Visser and go up 2-1. The Mavs continued their run by breaking again to go up 4-1. They allowed the Aggies one more game before Shepp forced an error to win the match 6-2.
 
The Aggies retaliated on Court 2, taking the next match over Santiago Giamichelle and Dante Teramo in a tiebreaker. The pair went down an early break to Corey Clarke and Luca Fe D'Ostiani at 4-2. They responded by breaking back to bring the score to 4-3, then Giamichelle won his service game to tie the score at 4-4.
 
With Giamichelle attacking the net, the Mavs earned another break off a volley winner to go up 6-5. The Aggies broke back, forcing the tiebreaker at 6-6. The tiebreaker stayed close, with the Mavericks falling two points short of the Aggies at 7-6 (5).
 
The early advantage came down to Court 3, with Lachlan Robertson and Ricardo Alban forcing another tiebreaker with Patrick Lohmann and Roko Stipetic. The match stayed close, with each team winning their service games. A hold from Alban and Robertson forced a tiebreaker for the match.
 
The pair dropped only one point the tiebreaker, earning the decisive victory. In his final match at the UTA Tennis Center, senior Alban forced an error on match point to clinch the doubles point for the Mavericks.
 
The Mavericks carried the momentum from doubles into singles, earning six consecutive victories to complete the sweep.
 
Shepp finished first with a straight-set victory on Court 2 over Visser. He broke Visser's serve early in the first set to go up 1-0, then allowed one more game before earning the double break to go up 3-1. He finished off the first set 6-1, ending with an ace.
 
The second set followed in a similar manner, with Shepp breaking early then hitting an ace to gain a 4-0 lead. He dropped only two more games to Visser before strong serving helped him finish the match 6-2.
 
Senior Caffarena took the next straight-set victory for the Mavs on Court 3. He was able to earn an early break over Stipetic to go up 4-2. While Stipetic held the rest of his service games, Caffarena closed out the first set 6-4.
 
He continued his success in the second set, earning another early break to go up 3-2. A second break allowed him to go up 5-2 before he finished the set 6-2.
 
Senior Daichi Akiyoshi followed with another victory for the Mavs in his WAC play debut on Court 6, taking out Lohmann in straight sets. He won the first set handily without dropping a game 6-0.
 
The second set was tighter, with Lohmann earning an early break to go up 2-1. Akiyoshi broke back, then held serve to tie the score at 4-4. Another break helped Akiyoshi go up 5-4, then he finished off the match with a long rally 6-4 to clinch the victory for the Mavs.
 
Court 1 followed, with Giamichelle earning his tenth win of the season over Clarke. Giamichelle started off strong with a break to go up 3-0. He allowed Clarke two more games before finishing off the set 6-2.
 
Giamichelle won the second set in a similar manner, earning an early break to go up 3-1. He dropped two more games during the set, finishing off the straight-set win with a 6-3 victory.
 
Robertson finished next on Court 4 with a tight deciding-set tiebreaker victory over Itay Feigin. An early break allowed Robertson to go up 2-0 in the first set. He allowed Feigin two games before forcing an error to break and win the first set 6-2.
 
Feigin fought back in the second, taking the set to even the score. After going up a break, Feigin was too much for Robertson to overcome, finishing off the set 6-4.
 
The tiebreaker stayed close until 5-5, when Robertson earned three consecutive points followed by a volley winner to go up 9-5. He allowed Feigin two more points before closing out the match 10-7 in the tiebreaker.
 
The match concluded with a deciding set victory on Court 5, with Teramo earning his sixth consecutive victory over Fe D'Ostiani. An early break allowed Teramo to go up 5-2 in the first set, before he closed it out 6-2
 
Fe D'Ostiani retaliated in the second, going up by the same amount early in the match. Teramo earned one more game before Fe D'Ostiani evened the score with a 6-3 win.
 
Teramo came out strong in the final set, with an ace to go up 2-1 early in the match. He broke serve again, gaining a 4-1 lead, then ended the day with a decisive 6-1 victory.
 
The Mavericks will be back in action on Friday to take on Grand Canyon in Phoenix at 3 p.m.
