PHOENIX, Ariz. – Between a pitcher's duel and an extra-inning loss, the UT Arlington softball team showcased valiant efforts across the board after the Mavericks split day one at the Western Athletic Conference Championship Wednesday from GCU Softball Stadium.
After taking down #6 Sam Houston Wednesday morning, UTA advanced to the double elimination round that led the squad to meet with the #3 seed, Stephen F. Austin.
The Mavericks and Lumberjacks went head-to-head as the game went into extra innings. UTA held a two-run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh before SFA tied things up. Unfortunately, a double in the right center gap plated the winning run, handing the Mavs their first loss of the tournament.
UTA will move into the loser's bracket and face the loser of #1 Utah Tech and #4 Seattle U/#8 California Baptist Thursday, May 11 at 7 PM PT/9 PM CT from GCU Softball Stadium.

Freshman
Marley Neises collected her 14th multi-hit game Wednesday after leading the Mavericks at the plate, going 2-4 against Sam Houston. After her performance, the Texas native has now reached base for 23-straight games.
Reagan Hukill (1-3),
Morgan Westbrook (1-3),
Lindsey Franklin (1-3),
Sophie Wideman (1-3),
Alaina Hampton (1-2) and
Meagan Smith (1-3, 2 RBI) all contributed to the Mavericks' eight-hit total.
However, Smith was responsible for both of UTA's runs after the senior put up an RBI-single and ground out.
Sophomore
Jessica Adams tossed her 11th complete game of the 2023 season. The righty held the 'Kats to just one earned run off four hits. With the 2-1 victory, Adams was credited with her 15th win overall.
PLAY BY PLAY: vs #6 Sam Houston (W, 2-1)
- Hukill led things off with a walk before Neises ripped a single through the right side that put runners on first and second with no outs. A passed ball advanced both runners before Smith knocked in UTA's first run with an RBI-single to right field.
- After a scoreless second and third inning, Sam Houston tied things up in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI-double to center field.
- The Mavericks regained the lead in the top of the fifth, thanks to an RBI from Smith as she is now responsible for both of UTA's runs.
- Adams and the Mavs went on to beat the Bearkats 2-1.

Wideman led the Mavericks with a 3-4 performance at the plate as Cortemelia (2-4), Hukill (2-5, 1 RBI) and Hampton (2-3) came away with multi-hit efforts.
Neises (1-4, 1 RBI), Smith (1-4), Franklin (1-4) and Castruita (1-4, 1 RBI) shared the success of the Mavericks' 13-hit contest.
Junior
Gracie Bumpurs started on the mound for UTA and tossed three innings. The righty allowed two earned runs off five hits before Adams came in and threw for the remainder of the extra-inning game.
The Bryan, Texas product logged three strikeouts and 23 batters faced. Unfortunately, SFA came out on top, handing Adams the loss.
PLAY BY PLAY: vs #3 Stephen F. Austin (L, 6-5) 8 Innings
- After two scoreless innings, UTA scored first after an RBI from Westbrook got the Mavs on the board in the third.
- The Lumberjacks tied things up in the fourth inning with an RBI-single up the middle and a ground out.
- In the top of the sixth, Hukill brought across pinch-runner Nicole Hill with an RBI-single to left center before Neises extended UTA's lead to 4-2 with a single up the middle.
- SFA scratched one more run across in the sixth with an RBI-double to right center.
- Wideman knocked a single to left center that extended the Mavericks' lead to 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
- The 'Jacks tied things up in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run from the bat of Lexi Benson.
- The game went into extra innings as SFA came out on top, scoring the winning run off a double in the right center gap.
