HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (25-24, 15-11 WAC) fell to the Sam Houston Bearkats (31-20, 20-6 WAC) after a 9th inning walk-off double on Saturday evening, 3-2.
After 2.1 innings of play, a nearly three-hour weather delay paused the game before game play resumed.
Zach Norris got the start on the mound for the Mavericks, tossing 6.0 innings of shut-out baseball. Norris gave up two hits and struck out four and walked none.
Gray Bailey relieved Norris and went 2.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Matt Novis was tagged for the loss, pitching the 9th and giving up two runs on two hits and walking one.
Offensively, the Mavs had six hits led by
Garrison Berkley who went 2-3 with one RBI and a sacrifice hit.
Wilson Galvan finished with a base hit, extending his reached base safely streak to 36 games.
Matt Cavanagh went 1-2 and drove in a run while scoring a run himself while also drawing a walk.
Cade Sumbler finished the game with a triple and scored a run. Rounding out the hits for the Mavs was
Tyson Pointer who finished 1-4.
After a scoreless 1st and 2nd inning where the teams combined for one hit which belonged to UTA, the Mavs would plate a run in the top of the 3rd on a Berkley single to left field that would score Cavanagh.
After recording the first out in the bottom half of the 3rd, a weather delay ensued which lasted for nearly three hours. After played resumed, Norris returned to the mound where he continued his dominating performance.
The Mavs would add another run in the top of the 5th after Sumbler tripled off the right field wall and Cavanagh would go on to bring him in on a ground out to the second baseman, putting the Mavs up 2-0.
A scoreless 6th and 7th brought us to the 8th where the Bearkats would plate a run to cut the Mavs lead in half, 2-1.
The bottom of the 9th inning began with a walk followed by a double to right center field to plate the runner from first to tie the game 2-2. A fly out to center field gave the Mavs one out with a runner on second. A double off the wall in center field would bring in the winning run for the Bearkats.
