HOUSTON, TEXAS ---
Briana Brown registered a match-high 15 kills to lead the UT Arlington volleyball team (8-2) to a 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 win over Texas Southern on the road inside the H&PE Center Tuesday night.
With the victory, the Mavs will now prepare to host North Texas on Thursday at 6 p.m. inside the College Park Center to kickoff the UTA Invitational. The team will also face McNeese and Texas A&M Commerce on Friday and Saturday. All matches on Friday and Saturday will be held at the Arlington ISD Athletics Center.
Brown hit a team-best .565 while adding a pair of blocks. In doing so, she now has 771 career kills, which puts her just 29 shy of becoming the 30th player in program history to tally at least 800 in a career.
In terms of milestones, head coach
J.T. Wenger is now one win away from becoming the sixth coach in program history to reach 100 career victories.
In addition to Brown, a pair of underclassmen had nice performances.
Evyn Snook had nine kills, seven digs and a pair of aces while hitting .316, and
Sophie Ocampo slammed down seven kills at a .333 clip.
Sophie Skinner (21) and
Mollie Blank (11) combined for 32 assists while
Alli Wells chipped in four to go along with a team-best nine digs.
Alyssa Duran matched Snook with seven digs, and
Samantha Glenn finished with four.
The win helped the Mavs improve to 3-0 all-time against Texas Southern in a series that began in 2009. This was the first time the two teams met in Houston. UTA also improved to 535-294-6 all-time against teams from the state of Texas.
