Mavs even WAC record with sweep of Utah Valley

OREM, Utah --- The UT Arlington volleyball team (13-4, 2-2 WAC) took down Utah Valley (4-11, 1-3 WAC) 25-16, 25-21, 25-19 on the road inside Lockhart Arena Saturday afternoon.

The Mavs will be back in action on Thursday against Grand Canyon inside the College Park Center at 6 p.m.

Offensively, the Mavs used a balanced attack with Briana Brown (9), Paige Reagor (8) and Jalie Tritt (7) combining for 24 kills. Kortney Puckett added six terminations, while Reagor hit a team-best .538.

Puckett had a match-best eight blocks, which was her third career outing with at least that many and one shy of equaling her career high. In fact, it was the first time a Mav has totaled that many this season.

As a team, UTA had 19 stuffs with Brown (5) and Brianna Ford (3) combining with Puckett for 16 of them. Tritt registered the lone solo block.

Ford and Sophie Ocampo chipped in four kills apiece. The dynamic duo of Sophie Skinner (19) and Mollie Blank (16) combined for 35 assists, and UTA produced a season-best 10 service aces, led by two apiece from Skinner, Blank, Ford and Alli Wells.

Defensively, Wells contributed a match-high 11 digs, which was her 91st career double-digit effort. She has 10+ digs in 14 of 17 matches this year, as well.

Skinner and Ford each chipped in eight digs.

In the opening set, UTA used a 7-0 burst late, eventually closing on an 8-2 run to produce a 25-16 victory. The spurt included a pair of kills from Reagor, as well as one apiece from Blank, Ocampo and Tritt.

After a bit of a slow start in the second, as Utah Valley scored four of the first six points, the Mavs scored four straight, highlighted by three-consecutive double-blocks.

Brown and Reagor added back-to-back terminations moments later and a 7-3 run pushed the lead to 16-11. Utah Valley responded to pull within one, but the Mavs scored three straight to regain control for good.

UTA held a slim 16-15 lead in the third set before a 4-0 run, highlighted by a kill from Puckett, two aces from Skinner and a double-block from Tritt and Puckett, gave the Mavs control of the set.

NOTES
With her performance, Wells pushed her career dig total to 1,879, which is nine shy of moving past Amber Pack (1,887, 1999-02) for third on the program's all-time list. Alicia Shaffer (2,033, 2008-11) and Ashley Smith (1,921, 2003-06) reside in the top two spots.

Saturday's victory also served as a measure of revenge on Utah Valley as the Wolverines won both meetings last year, including a postseason victory in the WAC tournament.
