First Under-Par Round Of The Season Caps UTA’s Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The UT Arlington men's golf team wrapped up its season-opening Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff from Dalhousie Golf Club on Tuesday with by far its best round of the tournament.

UTA posted a final-round 296 total – 14 shots better than its 2nd round and a seven-stroke improvement from the 1st round – en route to a 12th-place finish.

Individually, newcomer Ethan Miller led the Mavericks for the week with a 226 total, but it was fellow grad transfer Arran Kanth who delivered UTA's first under-par round of the young season with a 71 to cap the tournament.

LSU ran away from the pack to win with a 20-under 54-hole total, seven shots clear of runner-up and co-host Missouri at -13.

INSIDE THE SCORES
MILLER
Miller started his final round with four bogeys and a birdie over his first seven holes. But after recording a par on the par-4 17th – a hole which he tripled and quadrupled on Monday – the Kansas State transfer was able to settle in and record two birdies in his next six holes to help lower his final-round score to a 74 (+2).

KANTH
The Englishman started slow out the gate and sat at +2 through eight holes with bogeys on the 11th and 17th holes. However, Kanth caught fire on the 18th – his ninth hole of the day – and carded three birdies in his next seven holes to produce a 71 (-1).

MIYA
Miya started his final 18 off with a double on his first hole – the 440-yard, par-4 10th – but quickly regained the strokes lost with birdies on 12 and 15. But two triples in three holes on the 17th and 1st derailed a rather solid round as he finished with a 79 (+7).

CRONJE
The South African produced a relatively steady round with nothing on his scorecard higher than a bogey, of which he had five, and also rolled in two birdies on his way to a 75 (+3).

BECK
The sophomore started his morning on the back 9 with a bogey and a birdie. Beck was able to card two more birdies on the 14th and 15th holes, but ran out of juice as he made the turn to the front, carding three bogeys and no birdies to finish with a 76 (+4).

THIS AND THAT
Miya ranked 9th in the field with 37 pars … Miller made one eagle which was tied for the 4th-most during the week … Kanth tied for 10th in par-3 scoring at 3.08 (+1) … big numbers did in the Mavs, who made nine triples or higher over the three rounds … the field scoring average was the highest of the tournament on Tuesday with a 74.92 … this was UTA's earliest start to a season since 2009, when the Mavs competed in the then-named Golfweek Conference Challenge.

NEXT UP
The Mavs face a quick turnaround as they will be right back in action Sunday-Tuesday, Sept. 10-12, when they compete in Louisiana Tech's Argent Financial Classic from Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La. This will be UTA's second appearance in three years; two seasons ago, the Mavs finished 11th at the then-named Jim Rivers Intercollegiate.
