Mavs Sweep Panthers In First Match of Spring Season

ARLINGTON– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (1-0) defeated Prairie View A&M in a 7-0 sweep in their opening match of the 2024 spring season on Saturday at the UTA Tennis Center.

The Mavericks started off strong, securing the doubles point for the early lead. Court 3 was a win-by-forfeit for the Mavs, as the Panthers did not have a doubles team competing.

In a dominant performance on Court 2, Sarina Reinertsen and Kansas transfer Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez did not drop a game to Francesca Duca and Andrea Pascual Blanca, earning a 6-0 win to clinch the 1-0 advantage.

2023 All WAC doubles team Tara Gorinsek and Ana Paula Jimenez capitalized on the doubles success, defeating Victoria Castillo and Ainara Vegal Rodriguez in a close tiebreaker. The match stayed tight until 6-6, when Gorinsek and Jimenez played a dominant tiebreaker and allowed their opponents only two points before closing out the match 7-6 (2).

The doubles momentum carried into singles play to complete the sweep. The Mavs gained a point at Court 6 due to a win-by-forfeit.

Jimenez was the first to finish, dropping only two games to Rodriguez on Court 3. After earning a 2-1 lead in the first set and a 4-1 lead in the second, Jimenez closed out both to secure the 3-0 lead for the Mavs and the 6-1, 6-1 win.

Bruna Casasampere was the next off, dropping only two games as well on Court 5. She earned a dominant 6-0 win in the first set, and allowed Cierra Garcia only two games in the second to win 6-0, 6-2.

Francisca Vergara had a strong showing on Court 4, taking out Pascual Blanca in straight sets. The first set stayed close until Vergara took the 5-4 lead, then closed out the set 6-4. Vergara did not allow another game, finishing off the match with a 6-0 win in the second set.

Gorinsek earned another straight-set win over Castillo on Court 1. Both sets stayed close at the start, but Gorinsek dominated after gaining the lead, finishing off the match 6-2, 6-3.

Reinertsen concluded the day with a strong win on Court 2 over Duca in straight-sets. She earned a dominant first set victory 6-0 and took a 5-2 lead in the second. Duca made a slight run to bring the score to 5-4, but Reinertsen was able to close out the set for the 6-0, 6-4 win.

The Mavericks will be back in action at the UTA Tennis Center on Friday to face Dallas Baptist (10 a.m.) and Cameron (2 p.m.).
