Mavs Down Southern Utah For Fourth-Straight Win

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington volleyball team (13-2, 3-0 WAC) won their fourth consecutive match, third straight conference match, defeating Southern Utah (6-8, 2-1 WAC) in four sets (25-13, 25-14, 25-19, 25-14) to remain unbeaten in Western Athletic Conference play and inside the College Park Center.
 
The Mavs put together a balanced attack with 56 kills as a team, led by Brianna Ford with 19. Ford had a team high 14 digs to go along with five assists and three blocks. She carried a .400 hitting percentage for the match.
 
Paige Reagor and Cansu Gunaydin finished with 11 kills apiece. Gunaydin chipped in with seven digs, one assist and two blocks. Reagor had a team high seven blocks to go along with one dig.
 
Mollie Blank had a match high 45 assists to go along with 10 digs, four kills and one block.
 
Samantha Glenn finished with 13 digs, second most for the match. Sjakkie Donkers had a balanced game, finishing with eight kills, nine digs and two blocks.
 
In set one the Mavs came out scorching hot, scoring the set's first two points and seven of the set's first 10 points. The Mavs would run their lead up to double digits, staying in command the entirety of the set before claiming it by a final score of 25-13. 
 
Ford was on fire in the first frame, registering eight kills to go along with six digs while carrying a .889 hitting percentage for the set.
 
Set two saw the Mavs stay red hot, scoring the frame's first eight points before the Thunderbirds could get on the board. The Mavs would go on to push their lead to double digits, where it would remain for the frame, ending in a 25-14 win.
 
Set three would be the most competitive set of the match. In a back-and-forth frame, Southern Utah took the set by a score of 25-19.
 
The fourth and final set saw the Mavs return to form, taking the first three points and scoring six unanswered points to run up the lead to double figures. The Thunderbirds would cut the lead to nine but could never get over the hump, falling in the frame 25-14, and dropping the match 3-1.
 
THOUGHTS FROM COACH
"We played well as a team," said head coach J.T. Wenger. "We got off to a great start and really put the pressure on. After dropping the third set I knew our squad would be able to fight back and finish strong, and they did just that."
 
NEXT UP
The Mavs will host the Tarleton State Texans on Saturday, Oct. 5, at noon from inside the College Park Center on Eras / Kids Day.
