DALLAS, Texas – The UT Arlington women's basketball team fell inside the Moody Coliseum to SMU by a final score of 71-46.
Avery Brittingham led the charge for the Lady Mavs with a team-high 17 points while pulling down 13 rebounds, her third double double of the season. Brittingham also finished with three steals, a block and an assist. The three steals are tied for her season-high and is the third time this season she's finished with three steals. She also tied her season-high with 32 minutes played.
Koi Love had her best defensive performance in not only a Lady Mavs uniform, but also in her collegiate career, finishing with a career-high six steals and matching her career-high in blocks with three. Love also finished with eight points, five rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes of action.
Coming off the bench,
Taliyah Clark chipped in with eight points to go along with a pair of assists and a rebound in 17 minutes.
Kendal Robinson added five points, three rebounds, an assist and a block in 18 minutes off the bench.
The Lady Mavs jumped out to an early lead, winning the opening tip and recording the first bucket of the game on a Brittingham jumper followed by a Love steal that led to an easy layup. Up 13-9 with four minutes left in the first quarter, UTA would go on a 10-4 run to put them up by 10 going into the second quarter, 23-13.
The second quarter was a quarter of runs for both teams, with the Mustangs starting the second with a 9-2 run to cut UTA down to three, 25-22. The Lady Mavs would respond with their own 8-3 run to extend their lead to eight, 33-25. SMU would end the quarter on a 9-0 run that saw them take their first lead of the game with 48 seconds left in the quarter, bringing us to the locker room down 34-33.
The third quarter saw the Mustangs go on a 10-0 run to end the quarter, putting them up by 17, 57-40. The Lady Mavs could not close the gap for the remainder of the contest.
As a team, the Lady Mavs only found themselves at the free throw line a total of seven times when they average about 26 attempts and 16 makes from the charity stripe per game. The officials let the two teams play, with SMU only attempting 12 free throws all game.
NEXT UP
The Lady Mavs return home to the College Park Center for the first of two games on Wednesday, Dec. 4, when they welcome the Houston Cougars to Arlington to kick off the second month of the season. Tipoff is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
