MBB: Mavs Travel to San Marcos Sunday to Conclude Non-Conference Schedule at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – UT Arlington men's basketball close the calendar year with their final non-conference game of the season on Sunday, Dec. 29, at Texas State in San Marcos at 4 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and on the radio on the Varsity App, 102.5 FM and KTNO 620 AM.

The Mavericks enter play having won two of their last three games, but dropped their last contest, a 79-56 decision at Liberty. UTA is led by forward/center Lance Ware, who is averaging a team-high 14.5 ppg and 8.3 rpg. The New Jersey native has recorded double-doubles in each of his last two games.

Texas State is off to an 8-4 start following a 83-61 home win in its Sun Belt opener over Georgia Southern on Dec. 21, the Bobcats' sixth win in their last seven.

The Bobcats are led by head coach Terrence Johnson, who is in his third season as the head coach in San Marcos. Johnson had previously been an assistant at Texas State from 2015-2021-22. A former AAU coach, Johnson also coached as an assistant at Samford (2010-13).

Texas State, who has six players averaging double-figure scoring, is led by forward Tyrel Morgan, who is averaging a team-high 14.3 ppg and 7.1 rpg. Morgan also shoots 43.5% from three-point range. Guard Kaden Gumbs (13.8 ppg), forward Tylan Pope (13.8 ppg and 6.2 rpg), guard Coleton Benson (10.8 ppg and 47.8% from distance), guard Joshua O'Garro (10.8 ppg and 7.0 rpg) and guard Dylan Dawson (10.3 ppg) are all key fixtures for the Bobcats.

The Mavs will be meeting the Bobcats for the 81st time in program history, and UTA narrowly leads the all-time series 41-39. Texas State has however won each of the past three meetings between the two, and six of the past 10 dating back to 2019.
