ARLINGTON – One month after joining the UT Arlington men's basketball team as a mid-year transfer, former Clemson and Tulsa product
Chauncey Gibson had his waiver to grant immediate eligibility approved by NCAA officials, and the former 3-star recruit is expected to make his Maverick debut on Saturday.
Despite court and NCAA rulings in December granting immediate eligibility to multi-time transfers, Gibson was not able to compete due to an NCAA bylaw which prohibits instant eligibility for mid-year transfers in basketball (and select other sports), unless a waiver is submitted and approved.
That waiver was submitted by UTA last month and approved by the NCAA on Friday. Gibson had been practicing with the program since January after transferring from Tulsa, but the 6-5, 190-pound combo guard can now suit up for the Mavs, beginning at 2 p.m. today at home against Stephen F. Austin.
A 2022 Dallas Kimball High School graduate, Gibson averaged 17.6 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists per game as a senior as part of 1,743 career high school points. He was ranked as the No. 23 player in Texas and originally chose Clemson over Texas Tech, SMU and Old Dominion.
After not playing and utilizing a redshirt year in 2022-23 at Clemson, Gibson transferred to Tulsa last spring. The consensus top-110 recruit in the Class of 2022 did not suit up for the Golden Hurricane this past fall, moved back home and enrolled at UTA for the spring semester.
Gibson is a redshirt freshman with three years of eligibility remaining, and potentially four years pending another waiver. He will be the second new transfer on the roster who wasn't eligible at the start of the season in November, joining current UTA leading scorer
Phillip Russell who was a byproduct of the aforementioned multi-time transfer ruling.
UTA head coach
KT Turner had the following to say of Gibson when he joined the Mavs last month as a walk-on:
"We're excited to have another local DFW product on our roster. I originally recruited Chauncey in high school, so I've been following him for a while. He's a skilled, long talent who can play multiple positions, shoots the ball well and is a high-IQ player."
Gibson gives the Mavs another valuable piece as they look to make a push over the final month of the season leading into the WAC Tournament in mid-March in Las Vegas.
