UTA Picks Up First Win; Splits Day Two of Mardi Gras Mambo

YOUNGSVILLE, Louisiana – The UT Arlington softball team split day two of Southeastern Louisiana's Mardi Gras Mambo as the Mavericks earned their first win of the 2024 season Saturday from Youngsville Sports Complex.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. ULM (L, 1-0)
ULM and UTA found themselves in a pitcher's duel as junior Jessica Adams logged a dominant performance on the mound for the Mavs, throwing her first complete game of the 2024 season.

The righty kept the Warhawks off the board while limiting their offense to just three hits across 24 batters. Adams went on to earn her first win, lowering her overall ERA to 2.71.

Offensively, UTA produced just a pair of hits which belonged to freshman Emma Lopez (1-2) and fifth year Lindsey Franklin (1-3).

It was a scoreless game up until the bottom of the seventh inning when a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch from Kaylee Cavazos brought the winning run across.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Nicholls (L, 8-4)
The Mavericks' bats came alive in game two of Saturday's action with four players coming away with multi-hit efforts.

Lopez (2-3), Marley Neises (2-3), Nikki Donahue (2-3) and Franklin (2-3) recorded their multi-hit game so far this season. Head coach Kara Dill put in pinch-hitter Valerie Ornelas with the bases loaded as the senior drew a walk that brought around UTA's first run of the game.

Donahue came away with one RBI with Franklin leading the pack with two RBI.

Freshman Jade Moreno saw the mound for the first time this season, earning her first start. The righty tossed just one inning before fellow freshman Abi Gutierrez came in for Moreno in the top of the second.

Senior Gracie Bumpurs relieved Gutierrez in the top of the third and went on to throw the remainder of the game. Bumpurs faced 16 batters, limiting the Colonels' bats to one earned run.

With the Mavs unable to swing a comeback, Moreno was handed the loss.
