SAN ANTONIO – The Mavs got their 2024 season off to a fantastic start, behind a high-powered offense and a much-improved bullpen, the Mavs claimed their first Opening Day win since the 2020 season.
FAST START
In the first inning,
Ryan Black slashed his first home run of the season to help UTA take the early lead. In the second inning,
Parker Airhart crushed the second home run of the game to deep left-center field, the deepest part of the ballpark. Heading to the top of the 3rd,
Jordan Medellin got his first hit of the year in the 9 spot, which earned him a run after
Ryan Black plated him home with his second RBI of the day. A wild pitch forced the stellar sophomore to come home for a quick 4-0 lead in just 3 innings.
MID-INNING WORK
In the top of the 4th,
Garrison Berkley mashed his first moonshot of the year with a 3-Run shot to left center to get the inning started. Later in the inning,
Ryan Black plated another run due to an error.
Parker Airhart also snagged his first RBI of the season in the top of the 4th, bringing in
Tyson Pointer to increase the lead to 9-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.
LATE INNING SURVIVORS
After a strong start to the game, recording 12 hits and scoring at least 1 run in the first 5 innings, the Mavs hit a bit of a drag when it came to offense. UTA only had 2 hits throughout the next three innings, belonging to
Tate Bethel and
Cade Sumbler.
Garrett Gearner checked into the game in the 7
th inning tasked with being the closer and did just that. The Winnsboro, Texas native allowed just three hits in 2.2 innings to record his first save of the season.
STELLAR PERFORMANCES
Six Mavs had a multi-hit game, Including
Tate Bethel (3),
Garrison Berkley (2),
Ryan Black (2),
Tyson Pointer (2) and
Parker Airhart (2). Berkley, Airhart and Black all smacked a home run as well.
PITCHING PROFILE
- Zach Norris started the season off for the Mavs on the bump, and he produced a solid outing, recording 4 strikeouts throughout 21 batters faced.
- Garrett Gearner earned his first save of the season, he allowed just 3 hits in 2.2 innings pitched.
ON DECK
UTA is back in action tomorrow, featuring a doubleheader, slated for a 12 pm and 3 pm start. Then the Mavs will conclude the series on Sunday at 1 pm. The Mavs will return home to compete in the Kubota College Series against Texas Tech at Globe Life Field, Feb. 20 at 6 pm.
