Mavericks Drop Close Match Against DePaul In H-E-B Tournament Of Champions

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (3-4) dropped a close match to DePaul 4-3 at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions on Friday at the H-E-B Tennis Center.

The Mavericks barely dropped the doubles point, winning one out of two matches which cost them the early lead.

The Blue Demons took Court 1 by two games, defeating Dante Teramo and Joan Torres Espinosa 6-4. Pedro Sasso and Andres Medus also fell on Court 3 to Leon Huck and Sven Moser 6-3 for the Blue Demons' second win.

Yazid Lahjomri and Meethre Barot were the only pair to knock off a doubles win, taking Court 2 6-3 over Laurenti Mandocesu and Matteo Ianquinto. This marked the first victory for the freshmen pair of the season.

The Mavericks fought hard in singles action to comeback, but the Blue Demons were too much to overcome.

Espinosa remains undefeated on Court 1 after winning in straight sets over Huck. The 6-2, 6-3 win put him at 3-0 on the spring season.

Teramo followed up his strong win against Rice with a straight-set win on Court 2 to move to 5-2 on the season. He only dropped three games to Mandocesu, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Barot played a tight match on Court 3, with all three sets coming down to tiebreakers. After dropping the first set 7-6 (1) to Iaquinto, Barot battled back in the second to take the set 7-6 (3) to force a decider. The third set also stayed close, but Barot could not overcome Iaquinto in the tiebreaker, dropping the set 7-6 (4).

The Blue Demons earned another point on Court 4, where Sasso fell in straight sets to Shourya Verma. Verma played two strong sets, taking the match 6-1, 6-1.

Lahjomri also fell in three close sets on Court 5 for his first loss of the spring. He came out strong in the first set, closing out the tiebreaker over Moser 7-6 (5). Moser proceeded to take the next two sets by one break of serve, closing out the final two 6-4 for the win.

Medus was able to finish his match in straight sets over Jona Gitschel, taking the victory on Court 6. Medus dropped only one game in the first set, starting off strong with a 6-1 win. Gitschel made a push in the second set, but Medus was able to close it out by two games 7-5.

The Mavericks look to compete in their second match of the tournament on Saturday against former WAC opponent New Mexico State at 1 p.m. They will be back in action at home on Tuesday to take on Texas Tech at 2 p.m.
