Hasty’s Incredible Save Propels UT Arlington Baseball To Split The Series Against UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team completed their series against the UTSA Roadrunners with a win in the final game, taking down UTSA, 5-4, to split the opening series at two games apiece.

EARLY INNING BATTLE
Parker Airhart got the day started for the Mavericks, smashing a monster home run halfway up the protective netting in left field to take the early 2nd inning lead 1-0. In the bottom of the second, UTSA plated the tying run with an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game at one a piece.

BACK AND FORTH
After a pitchers' dual from Caden Noah, Nicholas Robb and a trio of Roadrunners stalled both offenses up until the top of 6th inning, where Ryan Ellis clutched up on 2 outs and roped in 2 RBI's to increase the lead by two. However, in a quick turnaround, UTSA answered right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 6th to even the score, 3-3.

IT'S ABOUT HOW YOU FINISH
Heading into the top of 8th inning, with the score squared at three a piece, Tyson Pointer singled with a squeaker in between shortshop and third to gain a runner on base.  In the very next at-bat, Tyce Armstrong drove Pointer in on a double smacked down the left field line to take the lead by one run. A throwing error by the shortstop advanced Armstrong to third with no outs. Parker Airhart came up to the plate, looking to cash in on another RBI on the series, and hit a sacrifice groundout to the second baseman to drive in Armstrong to increase the lead, 5-3.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS
In the bottom of the 9th, the Roadrunners started to fight back, with a quick couple of hits and a run, the Mavericks started to falter with just half an inning to go. However, with a 5-4 lead, Jacob Hasty was put in the bottom of the 9th inning with no outs and two runners on base, tasked with getting an extremely difficult save. The 6'2" lefty came in during an unfathomable tough situation, but that didn't phase the Keller, Texas native. He grounded out his first batter, which in turn forced the runner at third to get caught in between home and third. Excellent defensive awareness from Tyce Armstrong, Ryan Black, Tate Bethel and Parker Airhart forced an unusual double play. With just one out to go, Hasty continued to pound the zone and forced the last batter of the day to hit a groundout to close the game. The save marks Hasty's first of his collegiate career.

PITCHING PROFILE
  • Caden Noah started the day off on the mound for the Mavs, and shined as the Sunday starter. The Longview, Texas native recorded 7 strikeouts (just one shy of tying his career high), and only had one walk. Out of his 86 pitches, 56 registered as strikes in 5.1 innings of work.
  • In relief, Nicholas Robb, the freshman from Keller, Texas, made his collegiate debut and helped hold the Roadrunners to just one run. He fanned 4 batters in 13 faced. He threw just 9 balls to his 26 strikes, being credited with the win in 2.2 innings pitched.
ON DECK
The Mavs will return home to compete in the Kubota College Series against Texas Tech at Globe Life Field, Feb. 20 at 6 pm.
